A Jewish Values Imperative

As we were approaching the summer months, one of our Bat Mitzvah, Hallie Pellish,

delivered a particularly compelling d’var torah at the service she helped to lead. She passionately expressed her concern about the harm being caused to our environment and the need for all of us to step up our personal commitment to making the kinds of changes to our consump-tion and habits that the urgency of the situation requires. Hallie’s plea was a wake-up call for me. I was both so proud of her poise and passion, but also rather ashamed that I, personally, had dropped the ball on being as passion-ate a voice as she was.

There was a time when I was Hallie. Back in High School, I organized an Earth Day Fair with several stalls of actions that could be taken and activities. I helped to set up our first environ-mental club in the school. While at college, I helped to found one of the first Jewish environmental organiza-tions in the UK, producing edu-cational workshops and materials. Back in the late 80s and early 90s, the scientists were not all on board with such unanimous certainty about the impact of human behavior on global climate change. But those of us who were concerned about the predictions being made with regard to sea level rise and global tempera-ture fluctuations argued strongly for the ‘precautionary principle.’ We

cannot, we argued, wait until the changes come before we decide it is all true and we have to act. We must make choices now that can help stem the tide of change.

Thirty years later and multiple generations of political leadership have failed to put long-term plans in place. There has been some prog-ress — LED lights, plug-in cars (only really better if the source of energy from the plug is from a renewable source), solar panels on roofs, and wind farms going up all over Europe. We have a great deal of technology that today allows for us to make significant changes. What we also

have now is a new generation of youth and adults whose voices are growing louder in demanding a real, large-scale response to the global cli-mate crisis that is unfolding. We have an increasing num-

ber of devastating weather and water events that cause human displace-ment, ecological harm, and billions of dollars of damage, all of which are making lead-ers around the world sit up and pay attention. Perhaps this time we really can make some significant, course-altering changes.

Sukkot is a festival that is all about paying attention to our vulnerability to the elements and the blessings of an environment in balance that will continue to produce harvests for us. So this year, our program on Erev

Sukkot is about the imperative for us to join in a global move-ment to create real change in sustaining our environment. We’ll have representatives from 350 Mass (https://350mass.better-futureproject.org) who will present the science and also help us learn about Massachusetts-based initia-tives that we can get involved with to push forward on a green agenda. Whether at the level of the syna-gogue (see Steve Winer’s article on changes we have made at the tem-ple), our local towns (a number of them have made commitments to sustainability targets in the coming years), our State, or our world, each of us has the ability to do something. And a whole lot of little somethings can add up to a much brighter future for us and the generations who follow.

Please plan to join us on October 13 at 7 pm for our Sukkot celebration. RSVP for dinner by October 9 at https://www.cbnaishalom.

org/event/adult-sukkot-dinner-and-program.html. For those just wish-ing to attend the program, we will begin at approximately 8:15 pm.

I love the changing seasons of New England, and one of my favorite parts is watching the

Autumn leaves turn to brilliant reds, oranges, and golds. While this signals the dormant stage for nature, Fall is a time of revival for educators. For me, it means Religious School has started, youth group activities get underway, and final details are put in place for our education semi-nars and overnights.

We had a fun first teen event at Laser Craze and Papa Gino’s on September 7.

On September 8, we had mad-richimot training for our seventy teens who will be working in the religious school this year.

Eitz Chayim had a successful opening day on September 15, and Chai School opened with ruach, spirit, on September 17.

WAFTY 678, our youth group for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, by the time you read this, will have had its first event at SkyZone and Wendy’s on September 22.

WAFTY, our high school youth group, organized the High Holy Days Food Drive, and has many exciting programs scheduled for the year.

The 6th grade Gesher Retreat is taking place at the end of October, the 8th grade Great Boston Adven-ture and the 9th grade Education Seminar to NYC are happening in

November, and before I know it, the 10th grade L’Taken Social Justice Seminar in Wash-ington DC, and the post-Confirmation education seminar in Philadelphia will soon be here.

So for me, Autumn is quite the opposite of dormant as the school year gets underway!

From Our Youth Educator – Fall is a Time of Revival for Educators

From Our Executive Director – Small Steps to Being Green

It’s not easy being green…actu-ally, it really isn’t that hard.

We all get inspiration from different places. For my son, it was Kermit singing that song about being happy and proud of who you are as an individual, and now, here at Congregation B’nai Shalom, inspi-ration comes from one of our B’nai Mitzvah students and her D’var Torah.

At her Bat Mitzvah, Hallie Pellish beautifully and eloquently spoke of decisions we make, and how if enough of us make a small change, that “small change can add up to something big,” imploring us to “come together to work against climate change.”

Here at Congregation B’nai Sha-lom, we’ve been using disposables for decades, thousands and thou-sands of plastic cups, forks, knives, spoons, and plates that have ended

up in landfills and polluting the ocean. We moved away from plastic plates a couple of years ago, to paper, and now it is time to take the next step.

We are stopping the use of regular plastic utensils and are switching to a compostable product called Green Wave, which is advertised “no plastic, no trees.” Our drinking cups are now made from a compostable and renewable biopolymer. Our little kiddush cups for Shabbat, once plastic, are now made of sugar cane fiber.

Personally, I’m taking my own small steps. I’ve brought in silver-ware and a couple of coffee cups and wash them after use so they can be reused. I try to remember my reus-able travel cup when I stop for coffee on the way to the office and have a reusable straw. Again, small steps.

Is there more we can do? Of

course, and we’ll look at ways to improve our recycling and other green initiatives in 5780. In Hallie’s words, “When we tell ourselves that one fork is okay, or that one straw tonight at dinner is fine, we contribute to the forty billion pieces of plastic cutlery used and thrown away every year.”

I read her words, and immediately my thoughts turned to Rabbi Hillel. “If I am not for myself, who is for me? If I am only for myself, what am ‘I’?” and, as Hallie, in her own words put it, “If not now, when?”

Dear Congregation B’nai Shalom Community,

We are now just beyond Rosh Hashanah. Please note that I am writing this on September 10. My preference would to open with some thoughts and observations about the High Holy Days, but they have not happened yet. For those I did not see or get a chance to speak with — L’Shana Tovah!

Our High Holy Days Appeal is still open, and it will remain open for the entire year. The goal this year was to exceed our fundraising from last year in advance of Yom Kippur. Hopefully we accomplished that goal.

Whether we have reached that goal or not, I hope that you will

contribute to the High Holy Days Appeal. Giving to B’nai Shalom is not only an investment in our spiri-tual home — it is an act of gratitude for the gifts it provides to us. The Appeal is an annual opportunity to sustain and support B’nai Shalom by making a meaningful donation to our operating budget so that we can continue valuable programs for members of all ages. The money raised from the High Holy Days Appeal is what enables us to offer programming above and beyond what is in our budget.

I encourage all members of our congregation to visit the High Holy Days Appeal page to see the video that I produced in collaboration with my daughters, Nina (11) and

Sadie (14). The video says more about who and what we are as a congregation and a community than I can put into words spoken or writ-ten. The video and donation page are: https://www.cbnaishalom.org/hhd-appeal.html.

Alternatively, you can send a donation using the paper form on page 19, but I still encourage you to watch the video. Thank you again and L’Shana Tovah!

With appreciation,Rob [email protected]

All ages are welcome as we close out the High Holy Day season with a joyful celebration. We will be dancing with our Torah scrolls to the sounds of our CBS Klezmer Band, unrolling a scroll, and reviewing our annual journey through the Torah. From those who have just become Bar or Bat mitzvah, to teens, to adults of all ages — we would love to have as many readers of one line of Torah spread across the scroll as possible. Member Activities

CBS Social Groups and New Member Connection Program

Please join me in welcoming the many new members that have made the decision to

become a part of our congregational family this year. As these individuals and families integrate into our com-munity, I hope we will all introduce ourselves and invite them into our conversations, play groups, card games, and our homes for holidays and life cycle events.

CBS Social GroupsAn easy way to get to know newer congregants, as well as long time members, is to participate in the CBS social groups. These groups are member driven with administra-tive support from the Membership Committee. For example, if you are interested in the ‘What’s Play-ing?’ group, you can simply choose a movie or show you want to see, email the group of people who have asked to be on the mailing list, and tell them where and when you are

going, and ask for others who wish to join you to do so. I am happy to help you with email lists and to advertise in the weekly or monthly CBS communications. It is that easy — no meetings, no commit-tees, or sign up lists. Just do what you enjoy and let others know the plan. The next time someone else can pick the movie. The same is true for all the CBS Social groups. You pick the day, time, and place for the group to meet. I can help to adver-tise and promote it, and then every-one meets and enjoys the activity. For a list of the CBS social groups, go the the website. https://www.cbnaishalom.org/lets-have-fun.html.

CBS New ConnectionsSave the dates October 20, Novem-ber 3, and November 16. CBS New Connections is for new members, or like-new members, looking for a way to connect with other new members. This program consists of

three sessions where our lay leaders, rabbis, and interested congregants will be able to learn about and dis-cuss the paths that led them to CBS. They will learn about the opportunities that are available to them and their families for volunteerism, life-long learning, and spiritual journeys. Needless to say, there will be bagels and coffee. Our newest members will be receiving invitations in early October. If you do not receive one and wish to attend these sessions, please let me know.

CBS Young Adults and J-FED YAD Special Yom Kippur Afternoon Gathering

Wednesday, October 9, 2 – 3:30 pm, Yom Kippur

Every year at the High Holy Days, we appeal to a Higher Force to judge us with compassion. But how judgmental are we of others, and can we really expect that which we aren’t willing to give? We’ll talk about how we can all work on ‘judging favorably’, inspired by the cartoon work of artist Hanan Harchol.

Following this gathering, all J-Fed YAD members and CBS Young Adults are welcome to continue the conversations, or join for any part of the remainder of Yom Kippur in the B’nai Shalom sanctuary, followed by a com-munity break-the-fast at approximately 7:00 pm as our guest . RSVP appreci-ated at https://www.cbnaishalom.org/form/you-be-the-judge.html.

B’nai Shalom Book Group Selections for October, December, & January On Monday, October 28, we will discuss Gateway to the Moon by Mary Morris. Taking place in a present-day impoverished New Mexico community, Gateway to the Moon is an extraordinary mystery. A teenage boy’s discoveries bring the community face to face with their religious and political inheritance. Amateur astronomer Miguel Torres, the young hero, is looking for work. He finds a job at the home of artist Rachel Rothstein. Strangely, Miguel finds many of the family’s customs similar to ones in his own ancient community. Miguel then begins to search for why and how his community was founded. To illustrate his search, the novel takes us through historical vignettes following the ancestors of his town’s residents, starting in 15th century Spain and moving to the discovery of America, highlighting their tortuous travels and courageous resistance to abandon-ing their faith. Congregant Stephen A. Sadow PhD, Pro-fessor Emeritus of Latin American Literature and Jewish Studies at Northeastern University, will lead the discus-sion. Dr. Sadow has met New Mexico Latinos who were convinced they were of Jewish ancestry. He is familiar with 16th century history of the area that suggests their claims may be true.

On Monday, December 9, we will discuss The Lost Girls of Paris by Pam Jenoff. Inspired by true events, the book is a unique story of friendship, courage, and mystery centered around three women and a team of female secret agents during and after WWII. In 1946, young war widow Grace Healey finds an abandoned suitcase beneath a bench in Grand Central Terminal, Manhattan. Curious, she discovers a dozen photographs in the suitcase, each of a different woman. Through the

British embassy in New York, she learns that the suit-case belonged to Eleanor Trigg, a Jewish refugee and leader of a team trained as couriers and radio operators, deployed out of London and sent incognito to France to aid the Resistance. They never returned home, their fates a mystery. Grace sets out to learn the truth about these women. Congregant Marsha Nourse, PhD, a pro-fessor in the writing program at Brandeis University and Professor Emerita of Literature at Dean College, will lead the discussion. Her literature and research interests are in Women’s, Environmental and Jewish Literature, and in American Poetry.

On Monday, January 13, we will discuss The Last Watchman of Old Cairo by Michael David Lukas. In this award-winning novel, a contemporary college student, son of a Jewish mother and a Muslim father, journeys from California to Cairo to unravel centuries-old family secrets. He receives a mysterious package that draws him to uncover a tangled history that binds the two sides of his family. The history has hints of mystery and magic, going back to the Ibn Ezra Synagogue in Old Cairo, built at the site where the infant Moses was taken from the Nile. The story illuminates the tensions that tear Muslim-Jewish communities apart and the forces that attempt to heal them.

The October and December meetings will be held at B’nai Shalom. The January meeting will be held at The Willows, Studio Room. All meetings start at 7 pm. All B’nai Shalom members are welcome. For more infor-mation, please contact Barbara Barry at [email protected].

Brotherhood ActionBrotherhood wishes all our members, their families, and the entire CBS Congregation a very happy and sweet New Year.

Our fall programming began with a well-attended brunch at The Bistro Cafe. It was a nice opportunity to see old friends and meet a few new ones. Also in September, the men of Brotherhood sponsored the annual Congregational “Welcome Back” BBQ; thanks go out to the many hardworking Brotherhood volun-teers, and especially Rob Sternburg who helped coordinate, and to the CBS Religious School for their gen-erous financial assistance.

Brotherhood will be organizing and providing parking lot assis-tance during Yom Kippur. Please consider helping with parking at the morning or late morning service. To sign up for a shift, please go to: https://www.cbnaishalom.org/hhd-parking-lot-greeters.html.

Brotherhood and Sisterhood are excited to be teaming up on Satur-day evening, November 23 at 7 pm to co-sponsor a special screening of the film Etched in Glass: the Legacy of Steve Ross, a true story of a boy who survived ten Nazi concentra-tion camps, settled in America, and became the driving force behind the iconic New England Holocaust Memorial in Boston. See the flyer on page 10 for more details.

Please mark your calendars for our upcoming Bagel and Lox Breakfasts, scheduled for Novem-ber 24, January 5, and March 15 at the temple. These breakfasts typ-ically feature exciting speakers or workshops that will be of particular interest to the men of our Congre-gation. Our November 24, breakfast will feature CBS Congregant Adam Levin; Adam was a recent partic-ipant on the TV show Jeopardy., where he came oh so close to ending

the historic run of champion James Holzhauer — you won’t want to miss hearing the inside scoop. RSVP to [email protected].

Lastly, just a quick reminder that it’s time to renew your Brotherhood membership, and stay a part of our active and growing men’s group. If you have already renewed your Brotherhood membership with your temple renewal package, thank you. If you’re new to the Congregation, or are considering joining Broth-erhood for the first time, please visit our web page: https://www.cbnaishalom.org/brotherhood.html, where you will find more informa-tion, including links to online or printable membership forms.

Our B’nai Mitzvah

Matthew Janecek will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on October 12, 2019. He lives in Shrewsbury with his parents, Judy and Rich, his brother Aaron, sister Hannah, and dog Abby. Matthew enjoys playing and watching soccer — go Liverpool FC and New England Revolution. He also loves the New England Patriots. Matthew recently started playing the euphonium in band at Oak Middle School, and will be participating in Cross Country this fall. He enjoys traveling, with his most recent trip to Europe, and upcoming trips to Paris and Alaska. Matthew’s Mitzvah project was helping to bring stuffed animals and coloring supplies to children in hospitals and shelters, to help make them feel safe.

William Edinberg will become a Bar Mitzvah on his 13th birthday, October 19, 2019, with the same Torah portion as his namesake and great grandfather, William Edinberg. This generational tradition initially was a coin-cidence, as Will’s mother, aunt, first cousin, and sister, all recited the same portion at their respective B’nai Mitz-vah. Will is the son of Allen and Lisa Edinberg, and has an older sister Samantha, age 16. Will lives in Westbor-ough and is in the 7th grade at Gibbons Middle School. There he appreciates math, science, and has a love of reading. In his free time, Will enjoys playing baseball (participating in travel teams for the past five yrs.), bas-ketball, hanging out with friends, and especially play-ing the trumpet. His claim to fame is busking in New Orleans and Harvard Square, earning a decent wage. His family dog is named Jazz, a tribute to his love of music. Finally, 19, his favorite number, is representative of Will’s “prime” emphasis on two factors, life itself and the One, a reminder of his faith.

Sophie Muriel Kopstein will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on October 26, 2019. She lives in North-borough with her parents, David Kopstein and Eliza-beth Nasser, and her older brother, Joshua (15). Sophie is in 7th grade at Melican Middle School, and has been recognized for excellence as a Student of the Month, in addition to receiving the President’s Award and Band Spirit Award. Sophie enjoys basketball, trumpet, drums, and robotics.

Cole Crandall will become a Bar Mitzvah on October 26, 2019, his 13th birthday. Supported by his parents, Jessica and Dave, and his siblings Chase (14) and Zoey (7), Cole is excited to take this important step and is thankful to share this milestone with his friends and family. Cole always finds a way to enjoy life to the fullest. He enjoys participating in community theater and school plays. His favorite roles have been The Mad Hatter, Pumba, Linus, and Winthrop (Music Man). Cole also participates in the school band (trombone) and the swim team, and is an avid reader. Cole attends Camp Young Judaea in the summer and is now in 7th grade at Gibbons Middle School in Westborough.
