Music To MoVe youThis is a great orchestra. I first conducted the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2009, and the musicians captured my heart right away. Now, as Chief Conductor, I want to capture the hearts of you, our audience, as well.

The Mahler cycle beginsThis year we begin our journey through the symphonies of Gustav Mahler – a milestone in the life of an orchestra. If you think about composers whose symphonies take you on a journey as you progress through them – Beethoven, Brahms, Sibelius – it is Mahler’s symphonies that provide the most astonishing development through the cycle. From the First Symphony – a young man’s piece – through the tragedy of the Sixth and the resignation of the final works, we take an emotional journey quite unlike anything else in the history of music.

yefiM bronfMan and eManuel aXTwo of the most poetic pianists of today are working with the MSO in 2014. I love Yefim Bronfman’s sound in Brahms – he has the most wonderful richness of tone and exactly the virtuosity you need for this music. His performances with us of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No.2 will be a highlight of the year. So, too, of course will be the appearances by Emanuel Ax in June. He is the most sensitive and generous of musical colleagues, and I am thrilled he will be joining us for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.4.

docTor Who syMPhonic sPecTacularGet ready for an invasion, as Australia welcomes back the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular, a musical celebration of the iconic BBC series.

Featuring brand new content, join the mayhem in the auditorium whilst the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ben Foster performs Murray Gold’s captivating music from the Doctor Who series, accompanied by a big screen featuring specially edited sequences of Matt Smith’s performance as the 11th Doctor. Keep checking over your shoulder though, as you may see some iconic Doctor Who monsters roaming the aisles. Beware appearances from the spine-chilling Silence and awe-inspiring Cybermen and Daleks, to name but a few.

oPening nighT galaWe kick off your 2014 Season in style with a blockbuster program followed by a black-tie cocktail party. Diego Matheuz, Principal Guest Conductor of the MSO, directs a concert featuring Joyce Yang, described as ‘the most gifted young pianist of her generation’, who will be soloist in Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. After this exhilarating concert, join us for a cocktail event with Diego and Joyce and enjoy the excitement of the beginning of another year of amazing music.

beeThoVen’s Piano concerTo no.4, feaTuring eManuel aX2014 is a year of sensational soloists, from violinist James Ehnes to pianist Yefim Bronfman. One of the major events of the year in music will be the partnership of Sir Andrew Davis and pianist Emanuel Ax in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.4. Ax, hailed by The Los Angeles Times for ‘his greatness, his overwhelming authority,’ is a poet of the piano, and this collaboration with the MSO is not to be missed.

For these landmark concert events – the second part of Sir Andrew’s multi-season cycle of Mahler symphonies – the Orchestra’s Chief Conductor will be joined by the MSO Chorus and superb international soloists.

Superb Finnish maestro Osmo Vänskä, conductor of an acclaimed Beethoven symphony cycle on CD, returns to Melbourne for this brilliant season finale. He partners one of the great violinists of our time in Sibelius’ powerful concerto.

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Recital Centre recapture the time when the world was full of mystery, and the ancients ruled the land. Myths about gods, heroes and nature have played a central role in the development of human culture and continue to inspire us to this day. The mysteries and majesty of the cosmos and its creation have captivated many composers, especially the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, whose Tapiola is a meditation on the ancient, mysterious Northern forests. This work has had a profound influence on many of the composers and artists featured in this year’s Festival.

Composer, pianist and conductor, Olli Mustonen is one of the most stimulating and thought-provoking musicians of our time. His 2012 performances of the Beethoven piano concertos with the MSO brought capacity audiences to their feet in acclaim. He returns to Melbourne to lead Australia’s most important festival of contemporary music, which will feature magnificent Australian violinist Kristian Winther in a major solo role in two programs.

In addition to the three orchestral programs featuring Olli Mustonen plus a piano recital from the Finnish master, guest pianist Joanna MacGregor’s time-travelling recital will encompass Bach and Shostakovich, the musical toys of Sofia Gubaidalina and birdsong from the Baroque to today. The Metropolis Festival also presents an eclectic collection of performances, talks and activities that dig deeper into the beginnings of our world and the stories and music we have weaved about it since the start of time.

the orchestral worKs i have chosen for the metropolis festival consist entirely of music with which i have a very stronG personal connection.

A special emphasis is given to the visionary and profound music of the great Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin; I consider my collaboration with him one of the most important and inspiring aspects of my musical life. In addition to my own works, the music of my own country, Finland, is featured through the compositions of my teacher, Einojuhani Rautavaara, his contemporary Joonas Kokkonen, and Ilari Kaila, one of the most original voices among the younger generation of composers in Finland. Our first MSO concert opens with one of Sibelius’ final works, Tapiola – an important influence to all other composers featured in these three concerts.

The Mso chorus is australia’s flagship chorus, renowned for its performances with the finest conductors, including sir andrew davis, Mark Wigglesworth, bernard labadie, stephen layton, Vladimir ashkenazy and Manfred honeck.

The Chorus is committed to creating new choral repertoire; recently commissioned works include Calvin Bowman’s ‘…far, far way…’, Andrew Ford’s Meeting the Barbarians, Brett Dean’s Katz und Spatz (co-commissioned with the Swedish Radio Choir), Paul Stanhope’s Exile Lamentations (with Sydney Chamber Choir and London’s Elysian Singers), and Gabriel Jackson’s To the Field of Stars (with the Netherlands Chamber Choir and Stockholm’s St Jacob’s Chamber Choir). The Chorus has premiered music by MacMillan, Pärt, Henze, Schnittke, Bryars, Silvestrov, Maskats, Machuel and Vasks.

The Chorus has toured Brazil, sung with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra

in Kuala Lumpur, with The Australian Ballet, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, West Australian Symphony Orchestra and Barbra Streisand; at the 2011 AFL Grand Final and the Sydney Olympic Arts Festival. The Chorus records for ABC Classics and MSO Live, and continues its relationship with Chandos with the recent release of Grainger’s choral works with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Sir Andrew Davis.

eDUCaTIon and CoMMUnITYThe Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Education and Community Outreach programs offer concerts and activities designed to inspire active participation in music for all ages. We work to create an inclusive and accessible learning environment, which integrates education and entertainment and fosters a life-long interest in music and learning. Through initiatives like Education Week, Symphony in a Day, The Pizzicato Effect, MSO Jams and the MSO ArtPlay Ensemble program, we are constantly refining how best to engage with our community. Highlights in 2014 include Education Week at the Melbourne Town Hall from 27 to 31 May, including a third Symphony in a Day project on Saturday 31 May with musicians from communities across Victoria, MSO Jams for Juniors and MSO Family Jams. We also continue to develop our on-going partnerships with the City of Melbourne’s ArtPlay, and Meadows Primary School in Broadmeadows, where our string instrumental music program The Pizzicato Effect goes from strength to strength. family classic kids is the Mso’s popular program of concerts for children aged three to eight years of age – and a great way to introduce young people to the magic of orchestral music.

With the children sitting right next to the orchestra, there are opportunities to sing along, respond to the music with movement and actions, follow the story and maybe even conduct!
