CONFERENCE DETAILS

The 2013 Cutting Edge Conference on Megaprojects will tackle key issues faced on the world’s largest tunneling projects. Packed full of informative presentations from handpicked industry experts, the conference program will draw on the challenges of current and future multi-billion dollar projects, from both North America and abroad, to address subjects such as:

• Political Risk & Project Financing

• Alternative Contract Procurement Methods

• Insurance & Bonding Considerations

• Management of Complex Contract Interfaces

• Large Scale TBM Design & Procurement

• Logistics & Construction Challenges

In addition, dedicated panel discussion and forum sessions – featuring targeted content and interaction from delegates – will round out each day. Networking functions, a tailored exhibit, and the opportunity to visit the world’s largest TBM – the 57.5ft (17.52m) Hitachi Zosen EPB machine, bor-ing the SR 99 Tunnel Project (Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program) – will make this a unique industry event that you won’t want to miss!

Registration opens: August 2013www.smenet.org/meetings

Site VisitSR 99 Tunnel Project (Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program)

Date: Sunday, November 3, 2013Limit: 50 People (Registration opens August 2013)Includes: Sunday, November 3, 2013Attendees are advised to bring their own work boots and safety equipment, although PPE can be provided on request.

Right now, Seattle is at the center of the megaproject universe. The world’s largest tunneling machine is about to begin boring its way beneath the city as part of a $3.1 billion program to replace the State Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct, a double-deck highway that has spanned the downtown waterfront for more than 60 years. After the two-mile-long SR 99 tunnel opens to traffic in late 2015, crews will remove the viaduct, clearing the way for new public space on the waterfront and a greatly improved SR 99 corridor.

Half the viaduct is already gone, demolished and replaced at the south end of dontown, near Seattle’s stadiums. Removal of the south-end section cleared the way for Bertha, the five-story-tall, 7,000-ton Hitachi Zosen EPB machine, to start her underground journey in the summer of 2013. Crews are also building an overpass near the tunnel work zone that will allow trucks and other traffic to bypass a busy railroad track near the entrance to the Port of Seattle’s busiest shipping terminal. The overpass is scheduled to open at the end of the year.

With the construction world closely watching the historic work that’s underway here in Seattle, it’s the ideal place to assemble the tunneling industry’s brightest and most successful minds. In addition to learning about projects from around the world, you’ll get a first-hand look at the SR 99 tunnel work zone.
