ABOUT MEAs a student in architecture, I wish to
develop a technical skill set and grow in conceptual design as much as I can. My
experiences working in the Construction and Materials industry have enforced the importance of
materiality and the physicality of what we design. Through experience with programs within my
university and with the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, I also believe in the importance of
art, beauty, and in developing intelligent concepts with
meaningful images. My goal is to be able to effectively communicate
design to all people and to continueto create intensive and intentional
work through my academic and professional career.
LANDSCAPE x ARCHITECTURE
Project to reunite landscape with a program that accommodates artists, researchers, and
activists. Using a gradual construction, my project will occupy the University’s coal pile within our given site, covering the coal and
letting a cast of concrete become hollowed out gradually, leaving the soil and earth underneath to undergo remediation
and new planting.

Iowa State’s given vision describes an intention to “lead the world in advancing the land-grant ideals of putting science, technology, and human creativity to work”. However, the ISU Power Plant relies on coal for 40% of the University’s total energy, which is unacceptable.
Coal is no longer King. The Anthropocene is the new geological epoch, and the changes humans have made to the landscape must be acknowledged. In response to the brief to “connect the individual act of imagining with the collective act of constructing” and to mark the end of coal as a human-used material, the coal pile will be sequestered under a square of fly-ash concrete.
The University will be invited to gradually excavate the negative of the coal pile, immortalizing it as a memory of progress, and creating a future for the site as a space for collective gatherings, art installations, and new growth.

MATERIALITYThis exploration of material set out to reveal
a relationship between one material, wood, with a void, The void was filled and excavated
to create a new set of material relationships, or a landscape. In the end, each element
anchors to the other in harmony - rather than creating a differentiation of mass and void
that destroy each other.
After receiving a log to work with, a cavity was cast with plaster, then gradually excavated by chiseling. The wood chisel scraps were
used to construct new arrangements of material, shown on the right, representing the negative of the log in different tactile forms.

Digital Collages made from interior photographs of the excavated log. On the left is a progression of rot markings through levels of wood removal, demonstrating the time-line of the log being peeled back layer by layer. Below is a collage of the rot lines and chipped away textures of the log’s surface.
“TWO X TWO”An experimental design-build project completed by a
studio of 77 students. Construction based on a precedent by SHoP architects, Dunescape, the entire
project lasted five and a half weeks. ROLE: Project Manager
