A Wahl Worth BuildingWahl Professional has added four new members to its Education and Artistic Team (W.E.A.T.). Reinforcing its commitment to teaching and demonstrating clipper techniques to suit a diversity of clients, Wahl has chosen unique artists from across the country (see below). “Each of them has a unique talent that grabbed my attention,” says Laura VanderMoere, Wahl Professional director of education. “They all possess the passion and dedication to Wahl and to our industry that secured them a position on our team.”

The new recruits will fi nd plenty of inspiration in the company of their 13 established teammates on W.E.A.T.—such as Garland “G-Whiz” Fox, who recently traveled to Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong on behalf of Wahl to perform men’s haircutting techniques before appreciative audiences in a series of educational and stage events. “No matter our language, we can all communicate through hair,” Fox says. “Our connection is the love for the industry and for the clippers.”

VanderMoere promises more global appearances in the coming months and years for her team. “This is just the beginning of an international fusion for Wahl Professional Global Education,” she says.

MAN OF INTRIGUEHe isn’t simple or easy to read. These days, it’s

possible for men to have substance and be on trend.

Implemented artfully and with restraint, an ombré look

can give the sophisticated male client the dimension

he desires without distracting the world from the

person he is. “Hair color is huge for men this season,”

says Eufora style director Mirza Batanovic. “Making

a bold statement with a beach-inspired balayage,

for instance, is the perfect way for confi dent men to

emphasize great style.” (Products used: Eufora HERO

for Men Pliable Pomade and Texture Putty)

Beauty industry publisher Milady has released the sixth

edition of its classic Milady Standard Barbering. First

published in 1993, this leading resource in barbering

education is a must for students and others seeking

guidance and inspiration in the fi eld.

The new version includes more than 75 step-by-

step procedures with updated color photos, plus new

material that emphasizes specifi cs on the business of

barbering. (Also due for release: a Student Workbook,

an Exam Review and a personalized teaching

experience called MindTap.)

Milady Standard Barbering, 6th Edition is now

available on Amazon.com. For more information on

this and other Milady educational resources, visit

in my fi rst competition,” he laughs. Not willing

to admit defeat, however, Vaughn tried again.

He went on to win more than 25 awards in

male hairstyling, and in 1993 he became the

fi rst African American to win the National

Cosmetology Association Award.

One day, Vaughn and his fellow Atlanta

stylists were invited to do makeovers for

various artists on LaFace Records. “My artist

was the group called After 7,” Vaughn says.

“I changed their look that day, and they

wanted me to do their hair from that point

on.” The group soon began fl ying Vaughn all

over the country, and eventually asked if he

would consider moving to Los Angeles.

In the years since, Vaughn has catered to

the likes of Muhammad Ali, Damon Wayans,

Maya Angelou and Matthew

McConaughey, among

many others. As The

Beverly Hills Barber, he

teaches classes around

the world and also holds

the role of international

ambassador for Oster

Professional Products. On

his list of must-haves from the

brand are the Titan Classic

76 and Tailor T Finisher—but it’s the new

Octane heavy-duty clipper that currently has

him, well, buzzing. “I love that clipper and I

use it a lot,” he says.

Vaughn plans to continue shaping the future

of the industry, encouraging barbers and

stylists to deliver high-quality, high-class and

high-end services.

Chris Vaughnhris Va

“You don’t have to live and work in Beverly Hills to be a Beverly Hills Barber,” Vaughn points out. “You simply have to elevate your professionalism.”

Staying cool in the South Texas heat

isn’t always easy—but Flawless Barber Shop

(fl awlessbarbershopcc.com) does its part.

Not only is every customer greeted with a

complimentary ice-cold beer (if they’re of

drinking age, of course), but the shop’s most

popular cut is a close-cropped Bald Fade, says

owner Rick Morin. The 1,600-square-foot

space—a converted house, complete with front

porch and original mid-century hardwood

fl oors—is equally cool in a different way. “The

look is very simple and sleek,” Morin notes. “I

wanted to make sure Flawless had a ‘home’ feel

to it that would be welcoming to customers.”

(The fi ve fl at-screen TVs adds to the appeal.)

Although the goal is to give men a grooming

space devoid of female frills and salon-style

fl ourishes, Flawless does provide a bit of

unexpected pampering, notes Morin. “After

every haircut, we perform a mini-facial

along with a shampoo. Then we style the

hair to fi nish the service,” Morin says. “Most

barbershops don’t offer those extras.”

Morin cultivated his attention to detail

over many years. He began cutting hair in his

high school days and became known as “Da

People’s Barber.” After serving six years in the

U.S. Army (yes, he wielded clippers to buzz his

barracks buddies), he attended barber college,

received his Texas state license and opened

Flawless Barber Shop in January of 2008 with

just three barbers on staff. Today, there are

nine, including Morin.

Specializing in straight-razor shaves and a

wide range of men’s hairstyles, Flawless also

carries its own line of grooming products sold

exclusively at the shop. Morin is passionate

about education as well as Wahl tools, and is a

member of the company’s Education & Artistic

Team (W.E.A.T.) as well as the creator of the

Flawless Barber Techniques DVD (available on

Amazon), which offers instruction on the basics

of clipper cutting.

With these credentials, it’s no wonder that

Morin is considered one of the top barbers in

the country. However, he might be prouder of

having been dubbed “the

nicest barber ever” by

one 5-year-old customer,

and the purveyor of “the

best haircut I ever had”

by a fi rst-time patron and

military veteran who had

lived in multiple countries

and all over the U.S.

“Our slogan is ‘WE THE

BEST’,” he says, “and

we have a ton of loyal

customers in the Corpus

Christi area who would

attest to this.”
