one penny red wine

one penny red believes in sourcing wines from growers who make wine with

integrity and have respect for the land. In many cases the winemaking approach

in the vineyard is sustainable, organic and/or biodynamic. These wines are

labour intensive and made by hand, some by conventional means others by

adopting a minimal intervention approach where its common place to allow

fermentations to occur naturally with indigenous wild yeasts. There are wines

that have low or no sulphur dioxide added, others are not fined or filtered.

Mostly these wines are fresh and alive, and love being enjoyed with food to show

off their personality.

We hope you enjoy our selection of these hand crafted wines and take away the

experience of trying something delicious and accessible.

montevecchio is an range of estate grown and hand made wines from the

chalmers family’s heathcote vineyard. with over 20 years experience in

sustainable winemaking, and through their vine nursery established in the 1990’s

the chalmers family have helped pioneer the grape selection available to us

today. the montevecchio wines are inspired by everyday drinking wines which

are fresh and vibrant - often regional field blends - and designed to be enjoyed

in their youth, while still showing structure and texture.

georgian varieties

The alluring wines of Pheasant’s Tears are fermented and aged in qvevri, a

unique Georgian vessel used to ferment and store wine. Qvevri were the first

vessels ever to be used for wine fermentation, with archaeological finds dating

back to 6000 BC. Qvevri are clay vessels lined with beeswax and completely

buried under the ground where the temperature stays even thoughout the year.

This white is golden amber in the glass with a nose of honey, but dry and

unexpectedly full-bodied in the mouth with notes of walnut and apricot.

Lobethal Road, Adelaide Hills.

Established in 1998 by Dave Neyle and Inga Lidums, the family-owned

vineyard produces an award-winning range of white and red wines under the

Lobethal Road and premium Bacchant labels. The five-hectare vineyard, nestled

at the foot of Mt Torrens in the Adelaide Hills, has north-easterly slopes that

nurture low yielding vines. The resulting wine retains elegant cool climate

characteristics through minimal intervention in the vineyard and the winery.

Lobethal Road embraces an environmentally sustainable approach to vineyard

management and uses solar energy throughout the property.

With vineyards reaching as high as a 1000m and with the philosophy to avoid

all treatments whatsoever the Frank Cornellissen wines are both intriguing and

delicious. This red wine is basically a field-blend of Nerello Mascalese mostly

(85%) with other local varietals from old vine vineyards: Nerello Capuccio,

Allicante Boushet, Minella black, Uva Francesa and white Minella. The farming

expresses Etna as made in a traditional way of blending different varietals,

resulting in a fragrant, elegant, structured wine with heaps of personality.

Jean-Jacque Morels’ philosophies are pretty extreme and are so labour

intensive that they can only be applied on a small artisan domaine like his. With

an annual production of just 650 dozen, he uses no chemicals instead allowing

the natural grasses and flora to coexist with the vines, weeding only by hand to

keep the vine canopy free of other plants.

Broc Cellars, California

Broc Cellars was nothing more than an idea not that long ago, about making

wines that were site specific, where the wines true character came from using

only sustainably, organically, or biodynamically grown grapes from areas that

most would consider marginal climates. Believing that vineyards develop ‘true’

character and complexity when they have to struggle to survive. In the cellar

they continue this practice using minimal intervention, in an effort to let the

grapes speak for themselves. Fermentation is allowed to happen spontaneously,

all wines are basket pressed, with little/no sulphur used in our wines until

bottling.
