An Introduction to theAfrican Wildlife Foundation

Page 2: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

AWF is the largest international conservation organization focused solely on the continent of Africa.

Page 3: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

We work with people to ensure Africa's wildlife and wild lands endure forever.

Page 4: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

AWF was founded in 1961, at the height of the African Independence movement.

Page 5: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

AWF’s first project was to help found a college on the slopes ofMount Kilimanjaro for Africans to study Wildlife Management.

Page 6: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

Over five decades, AWF has implemented innovative projects linking wildlife to people.

Page 7: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

Africa is now modernizing rapidly through increased investment,as well as economic and human population growth.

Page 8: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

Which prompts the question: Will there be space for wildlife in Africa’s future?

Page 9: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

The continent of Africa is huge. Three times the size of the United States.

Page 10: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

Using science, AWF has identified 30 large landscapes whereAfrica's wildlife can be conserved well into the future.

Page 11: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

These are large, open spaces where viable wildlifepopulations can breed and live naturally.

Page 12: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

AWF invests in four principle ways.

Page 13: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

First, we consider the available LAND & HABITAT.

Page 14: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

And invest in strengthening parks and reserves.

Page 15: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

And secure wildlife corridors.

Page 16: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

We ensure our strategies are grounded by CONSERVATION SCIENCE.

Page 17: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

With a focus on endangered species like Elephants…

…and Great Apes.

Page 20: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

For example, AWF recently hosted an emergency Rhino Summit inclusive of governments and private landowners throughout Africa.

Page 21: Meet the African Wildlife Foundation

We establish CONSERVATION ENTERPRISES that are ownedby the local people who live alongside wildlife.

Enterprises like, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge in Rwanda.

We help BUILD CAPACITY by investing in people and their education.
