2017-18 UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA SWIMMING & DIVING FAST FACTS

THE SCENEThe #3/17 Gators are on the road for their final Invitational before the SEC Championships. The team is set to compete at the Auburn Invitational from Feb. 2-4.

The field consists of host Auburn, Alabama and Florida State.

Two women’s teams are ranked in the CSCAA Top 25 coming into the meet. Auburn - 15th Florida - 17th Alabama - RV

Four programs are ranked in the men’s CSCAA Top 25 poll entering Thursday. Florida - 3rd Auburn - T-16th Alabama - T-16th Florida State - 21st

The Gators have faced off in dual meets against each of the three teams competing.

The men have a 3-0 record against the field, having defeated Auburn 183-114, Alabama 158-140 and Florida State 209-91.

The women are 2-1 against the teams, topping Alabama 166-134 and beating FSU 184-116. The Gator women fell 184-116 to Auburn.

GATORS IN THE RANKINGSBoth Florida teams are ranked in the CSCAA Top 25 Poll. The Gator men moved up one spot, sitting at third in the nation, while the UF women are 17th.

SEC HONORSFlorida earned three more SEC honors this week, with Caeleb Dressel garnering SEC Swimmer of the Week and Michael Taylor and Taylor Ault both winning SEC Freshman of the Week.

Dressel led the Gator men to victory over the no. 12 Tennessee Volunteers, pitching in three first place finishes. The senior swam the 100 breast for only the second time this season and beat the field with a B-cut time 53.23. The Green Cove Springs, Fla. native also swam a B-cut time of 19.41 to win the 50 free and followed that performance with a win in the 200 IM, recording a time of 1:44.91, for his third B-cut of the day. Taylor swept the backstroke events for the first time in his career against the Volunteers. He posted a B-cut time of 47.71 in the 100 back and followed with a B-cut of 1:44.83 in the 200 back. The freshman also raced in the 200 medley relay – in which he recorded a 21.79 backstroke split. The team finished in second overall with a time of 1:25.67. Ault raced in four events against the ninth-ranked Tennessee Volunteers, recording two wins. She swam a B-cut time of 4:47.04 to clinch first place in the 500 free and finished a sweep of the distance events, winning the 1000 free with a time of 9:52.83. She also finished fourth in the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.55 and rounded out her events with the 400 free relay, in which she recorded a 51.67 split.

The Gators’ hold the all-time series advantage over Tennessee, with the men moving to 25-20 and the women falling to 27-5 in dual meet competition.

The men finished the dual meet season with a 7-1 record and the women recorded a 4-5 record during the 2017-18 campaign. Caeleb Dressel and Khader Baqlah led the men’s team with three wins apiece during the meet. Dressel notched B-cut times in all three of his event victories against the Volunteers: 50 free (19.41), 100 breast (53.23) and 200 IM (1:44.94). Balqah recorded two B-cuts as well, swim-ming a 1:35.88 in the 200 free and registering a time of 4:22.20 in the 500 free. The sopho-more’s final victory came in the last event of the meet, the 400 free relay, in which the team recorded a time of 2:56.01. Jan Switkowski, Mark Szaranek and Michael Taylor each contributed two wins apiece for the Gators. Switkowski and Szaranek swept the butter-fly events with B-cut times, with Switkowski swimming a 47.08 in the 100 fly and Szaranek recording a time of 1:45.53 in the 200 fly. Both men were also on the winning 400 free relay team that recorded a time of 2:56.01. Taylor’s victories came from a sweep of the backstroke events, where he swam B-cut times of 47.71 (100 back) and 1:44.83 (200 back). Ben Lawless (1000 free), Marco Guarente (200 breast) and Maxime Rooney (400 free re-lay) round out the victories by the Gator men. On the women’s side, Taylor Ault led the way for Florida with two wins against the Volun-teers. She swam a 9:52.83 in the 1000 free and notched a B-cut in the 500 free with a time of 4:47.04 to nab her second victory of the meet. Emma Ball grabbed a win for the Gator wom-en, swimming a B-cut time of 53.50 in the 100 back to clinch the victory. Brooke Madden rounded out the wins for Florida, finishing first on the 1-meter board with a Zone qualifying score of 304.80. The men finished with 22 top-3 finishes throughout the meet, while the women notched 18 of their own.

SWIMMING TOWARDS POSTSEASON

Eight men have recorded two individual A-cut times to go along with four relays (200 FR, 400 FR, 800 FR, 400 MR) that all recorded an A-cut qualification. The 26 men also combined for 69 individual B-cut times and a B-cut in the 200 MR. STRONG SENIOR LEADERSHIPThe senior men have accounted for 49 indi-vidual wins and have 83 wins overall. Jan Switkowski leads the way with 30 wins (16 individual and 14 relay wins), while Caeleb Dressel follows behind with 29 wins (17 individual, 12 relays). Ben Lawless has eight individual wins of his own and Mark Szaranek has five relay wins and six individual wins. Blake Manganeillo has two individual wins under his belt and Enzo Martinez-Scarpe has been a member of three relay wins. On the women’s side, Amelia Maughan has recorded

a two individual wins and three relay wins for the seniors.

JUNIORS SHOOTING FOR SUCCESSFive Gator women have accounted for 13 individual wins, as well as six relay wins throughout this season. Hannah Burns leads the way with seven individual wins. Syndey Sell has four individual wins this season, while Teya Syskakis (3-meter) has recorded one individual win. Georgia Marris has recorded both an individual win, as well as two relay wins for the Gators. Paige Scheriger rounds out the junior women with four relay wins. Stanley Wu, Bayley Main, Ross Palazzo and Grady Heath have picked up wins on the men’s side. Wu has recorded both an individual and three relay wins, while Main notched two indi-vidual victories. Palazzo pitched in a first place finish and Heath contributed a relay win as well as picking up two individual victories of his own.

SOPHOMORE SPEEDThe sophomore class has been incredibly strong on the wom-en’s side through the first half of the year, accounting for 37 indi-vidual wins and 19 relay wins. Sherridon Dressel leads the way 12 wins overall (five individual, seven relay). Savanna Faulconer holds seven individual victories and one relay win, while Emma Ball has four relay wins and five individual first place finishes under her belt. Kelly Fertel has recorded five individual wins and two relay wins and Brooke Madden has claimed seven vic-tories of her own on the boards. Kelsey Dambacher has been a member of three winning relays and recorded one individual victory, while Georgia Darwent has two individual wins of her own. Dani Keymont has won three individual events as well as a relay this season and Bella Garfalo has one individual event victory. Tori Bindi has recorded one relay win to round out the women. Khader Baqlah leads the men with 16 wins (nine indi-vidual, seven relays) through the season thus far and Maxime Rooney is close behind with 11 of his own - five individual and six relay wins. Chandler Bray has picked up two relay wins, while Grant Sanders has one of his own. Marco Guarente has notched five individual wins this season and Drew Clark, Alex Farrow and Dakota Mahaffey have each picked up one event victory.

FRESHMEN IMPACT Six Gator freshmen have earned a tally in the win column over through the season thus far. Michael Taylor has recorded five relay wins to go along with four individual wins. Clark Beach has picked up a relay win and an individual win, while twin Ethan Beach notched his first individual victory. On the wom-en’s side, Taylor Ault has won eight individual events and two relays, while Nikki Miller has won one of each. Emma Whitner closes out the wins for the freshmen with an individual 3-meter victory.

SUCCESSFUL SUMMER The Gators had a fantastic summer both at national and inter-national competition. Florida had 23 swimmers compete in the Phillips 66 National Championships. Caeleb Dressel led the pack with five qualifications for the FINA World Championships, while alums Elizabeth Beisel and Conor Dwyer each earned a spot on Team USA as well.

11 Gators competed in the 17th FINA World Championships this summer, with Caeleb Dressel setting numerous records in the process, earning the Male Swimmer of the Championship Meet award. He tied Michael Phelps for the most gold medals at a World Championship (seven) and he became the first person to win three gold medals in one day. The senior set four American records, along with two world records during the week. His time in the 100m fly is the second fastest in history, only .04 seconds off Phelps’ world record (2009) and he became the third fastest swimmer in the 50m free. Coach Troy served as an assistant coach for Team USA during competition.

32 Gators raced at this year’s U.S. open championships and se-nior Andrew Brady led the way for them as he earned the High

Five Gators competed at the WUGs this past August, with Maxime Rooney leading the way with three medals (two gold, one silver). Grant Sanders and Mitch D’Arrigo also claimed a silver medal in the men’s 4x200m free relay, along with Rooney. Georgia Marris and Bayley Main each competed for Team New Zealand, while Coach Poppell served as an assistant coach for Team USA.

HEAD COACH GREGG TROYAs head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming teams, Gregg Troy has cre-ated an atmosphere of consistency and excellence in his years at the helm. He has guided the Gators to 37 NCAA event titles, 168 SEC event titles, more than 400 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections and close to 1,000 All-American honors. Troy has tutored over 75 Olympians and has coached athletes to more than 155 U.S. and international records. Just this past summer, he was chosen as an assistant coach for Team USA at the FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. He served as the 2012 USA Men’s Olympic Swim Team head coach in London and in that same year he was inducted into the American Swimming Coaches Associa-tion Hall of Fame.

In his first season with the Gators, Poppell helped the men’s team win their fifth-con-secutive SEC Championship and second consecutive third place finish at NCAAs. He also tutored 11 of the women’s swimmers and two divers into qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Of those13 that competed, 11 will return to the team this season.

DIVING COACH | BRYAN GILLOOLYBryan Gillooly is in his second season at Florida after being named the diving coach this past summer. Gillooly tutored three divers to the NCAA Champion-ships in his first season. Eight of his divers made it to SEC Championship competition as well. He previously coached the divers at FAU and was the age group coach of the Fort Lauderdale Diving Team from 2014 to 2016. This past season, he won the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association’s Co-Dive Coach of the Year award while at FAU and coached three 2016 Olympic trials qualifiers who trained at Fort Lauderdale.
