Fast Facts The population of South Sudan is unknown, but estimated at 10-12 million. South Sudan is the world’s youngest country, becoming independent from Sudan in 2011. Fighting broke out in December 2013 over political differences and quickly escalated into a conflict between the two largest tribes in the country. Since 2013, over 2.5 million people have fled, over 2 million are internally displaced, and unknown thousands have been killed. Our Partners In partnership with the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan and the South Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church, we support peace-building programs to strengthen and further develop church primary and secondary schools and provide instructors for adult theological education. In response to the recent violence and displacement of residents, the PC(USA) has joined efforts to provide emergency relief for families, improving health conditions, increasing availability of clean water and providing food and non-food necessities. The PC(USA) also supports peace-building initiatives through RECONCILE which helps strengthen and support families and communities as they resettle and seek peace. 2019 Presbyterian Peacemaking and International Peacemakers Programs The International Peacemaking Program makes it possible for Presbyterians all over the U.S. to receive insight, wisdom and instruction from innovative leaders of partner denominations and partner organizations around the world. Since 1984, the Presbyterian Mission Agency has hosted approximately 300 International Peacemakers from 60 countries. These visits have opened hearts and minds, touched lives, established relationships and inspired new ministries. By sharing stories of their work and witness, the peacemakers help us understand peace and justice concerns around the world and provide insights that can inspire us to greater faithfulness. Their visits broaden our sense of God’s inclusive family and help equip us to build a culture of peace and nonviolence for all God’s children. Visit presbyterianmission.org/ministries/peacemaking.
