The first BioWales conference heldin 2002 - a small, but ambitiousaffair - has grown into what is nowone of the largest bioscienceconference and biopartnering eventin the UK. Spanning two days,BioWales plays host to a range ofactivity: there are presentationsfrom world-renowned speakers, a

brokerage session with one-to-onemeetings, workshops on dedicatedtopics, with a trade-show exhibitionrunning throughout.

This multi-faceted conferencestrives to be 'fit for purpose' and isreformatted year on year to reflectand adapt to the needs of industry.

This year's major change is theintroduction of workshops to theprogramme. Delegate feedbackindicated that companies want astronger interactive element to theconference, allowing them todiscuss topics that potentiallyunderpin their success in themarket.

BioWales 2010 comes armed with renewed vitality: despite therecession, current statistics show that the Bioscience sector inWales is thriving. Contributing over £1.3bn to the Welsh economy, with over 330 businesses involved, the industry employs more than15,000 people. This sector has a lot to shout about and BioWales isthe perfect flagship to showcase its successes.

Wales such as Flexible Support forBusiness (FS4B) and the Academicfor Business (A4B) programmes.Funding is also available throughFinance Wales and Excalibur. Thefinal workshop - 'Inward InvestmentOpportunities' - will give anoverview of the sector, highlightingthe skills and sector supportavailable to companies.

The organisers also responded todelegate feedback by restructuringthe brokerage sessions. These havebeen reconfigured to enable moreone-to-one sessions betweenorganisations, and also to ensurethat the right people talk to eachother. The Brokerage activity iscentral to the BioWales mix, runningthroughout the two days. It is also apart of the conference that has

exponentially grown year on year:2009's brokerage had over 350meetings, up from 225 the previousyear.

Coordinating this impressive set upis Dr Sharon Thomas, the WelshAssembly Government's Healthcareand Life Science Specialist at theDepartment of Economy andTransport. She described the new'accept and decline' system for thebrokerage event and why it is beingimplemented 'It all starts with aninitial call for interested parties totake part via online registration.'Those seeking brokerage meetingsare linked to Bio-partneringregistration through the EUEnterprise Europe Network (EEN).The EEN facilitates technologytransfer throughout the UK and

Companies also stated that gainingaccess to finance has becomeincreasingly difficult in currenteconomic times. In response tothese concerns, the WelshAssembly has created threeworkshops dedicated to funding andfinance. The first workshop - run bythe Assembly's Research andDevelopment Advisor, Lisa Wheatley- is titled 'Funding opportunitiesfrom the EU Framework FundingProgramme'. This session willadvise businesses on what FP7funding is available, how to access itand how to write successfulproposals. The second session, titled 'Finance' will be co-run byBrenig Preest from Excalibur Groupand Meurig Watts from the WelshAssembly Government. This sessionwill discuss funding opportunities in

Europe, bringing together thoseseeking or offering technologyopportunities, as well assupporting access to European-wide research fundingframeworks. Sharon continued'Each organisation submits atechnology profile, which canconsist of an offer or request fortechnology, know-how orexpertise. All profiles then getentered into the online catalogue.Approximately two weeks beforethe conference all registrants areasked to view the catalogue andselect other organisations thatthey'd like to meet with. In thepast, once a request had beenmade for a meeting that would beautomatically entered into themeeting schedule, howeverfeedback from last year indicatedthat at times there was a miss-match between companies -something that we are keen to

avoid. This new 'accept or decline'system allows the requestedcompany to either accept or declinethe meeting depending on theirrequirements. This makes sure thatevery company only has a schedulethat is 100% worthwhile to them.'

Sharon's dedication to perfectingBioWales's brokerage process hasbeen catalysed due to the deals andcollaborations that have occurredsince the last conference. 'In justthe first six months alone, as aresult of the brokerage, licensingdeals have increased by 100%'Sharon continues, 'There has alsobeen a significant rise is R&Dapplications under collaborativegrants. The brokerage event is verysuccessful and these results showa genuine need and purpose for itto grow and continue.'

BioWales is fully supported by theWelsh Assembly Government, whocontracted MediWales to deliver the2010 speaker programme. Workingwith Sharon and her team,MediWales has devised an highprofile line up including sessions onthe following topics: translationalresearch; stem cells -industrialisation for drugdevelopment and therapy; point ofcare diagnostics; cancer genetics;and “futurewatch” - an introductionto what's hot and new in biosciencetoday. The headline session - stemcell research and regenrativemedicine - is currently very highprofile across the UK, but especiallyin Wales. The session alsoheadlines Stephen Minger, head ofresearch and development for celltechnologies at GE Healthcare andrecently featured on the BBCHorizon programme: ‘Fix Me’(November 09).

Tell us a little about the history ofBioWales? BioWales started as a small conferencein 2002, centred on bioscience researchin Wales, to allow academia andindustry professionals to network. Thisinitial conference had 170 delegatesand was a great success. The nextevent in 2004 attracted even moredelegates, and BioWales has grownyear on year.

What’s planned for BioWales 2010? BioWales 2010 will be our biggestconference to date. After listening tofeedback from last year, we haveintroduced new workshop sessionsover the two days. We have booked fullsized stands in a larger exhibition area,as we are anticipating a high number ofdelegates. We are also offering a technologybrokerage service on an accept/decline

basis. Last year the brokerage serviceproved very popular and generated over350 meetings.

Who is speaking at BioWales 2010?This year’s programme features amixture of UK and Internationalspeakers, including Sir Martin Evans, who specialises in knock-out genesand has inaugurated a new spin outcompany. He has done stem cell workwith key industry figures, includingSteve Dennet, Charlie Archer and thedental school at Cardiff University.

What does BioWales offer the WelshLifescience industry?BioWales is the biggest bioscienceconference in Wales. The conferenceprofiles internationally and locallyrenowned speakers, attracting a widerange of delegates from Wales, thewider healthcare and lifesciencecommunities from the UK and beyond.

This makes it an excellent opportunityfor high quality networking and profilesexciting new developments inlifesciences. What can Biowales 2010 offercompanies? It gives Welsh bioscientists the chanceto promote themselves and theirorganisations on an international stage.International companies in turn willhave exposure to the Welshorganisations, and develop anunderstanding of what Wales has tooffer. It will allow people from outsideof Wales the chance to gain access toWelsh academia and NHSprofessionals, as well as informationsuch as licensing, collaborationopportunities and FP7 funding.IBW are supporting the programme, giving Welsh companies theopportunity to access assistance andadvice on international trade.

The NHS Partnership withIndustry/Academia Award went to DrJane Lewis ( Podiatry department ofthe Cardiff and Vale UniversityHealthboard). The Podiatry Department - at Cardiffand Vale University Health Board -collaborated with HuntleighHealthcare in Cardiff in the productionof the Dopplex Ability, a device foridentifying peripheral arterial disease(PAD) – a prevalent but often miss-diagnosed disease. This deviceaddresses three needs: to improve theidentification of PAD, the quality ofreferrals, and improve cardiovascularmorbidity and mortality. The device works via the simultaneousinflation of blood pressure cuffs, whichobviates the need for the patient to berested and considerably reduces theassessment time. Consultationsregarding clinical need, patient needand equipment design between thePodiatry department and HuntleighHealthcare have been ongoingthroughout the development andtesting of the product. Key designinputs have been fed into the project todetermine ease of use, acceptabilityand reproducibility in a clinicalenvironment. The test takes approximately 5minutes - compared to the currentmethod that requires 15mins rest plus10-25 mins testing time.DopplexAbility gives greater patient comfort,

shorter appointment times andincreases patient through put. It alsoallows for earlier diagnosis andintervention for lifestyle changes, which can lead to treatment of riskfactors resulting in fewer inappropriatereferrals for costly vascularconsultations and duplex scanning.Another knock-on effect is thereduction in the number of hospitaladmissions and amputations with aderived reduction in the pressure onsurgery and intensive care capacitiesat vascular surgery departments;fewer premature deaths would beexpected.

DTR Medical – the rapidly growingspecialist in sterile single-usesurgical instruments – is seeing asignificant rise in enquiries frommany parts of Europe, the MiddleEast, and beyond, underlying thegrowing need for highquality disposableequipment.

DTR Medical believesthere are several factorsinfluencing the increasein sales for sterile singleuse equipment. Firstly,single-use disposablesreduce the risk of cross-contamination.Complications like surgicalsite infections and extendedhospital stays are minimised, which lowers costs andreduces potential litigation.

Secondly, disposables rule outreprocessing – the need to cleanreusable instruments.Reprocessing is a difficult andtimely process, often leading todelayed patient throughput andraised costs from high manualhandling rates.

Another positive with single-usedisposables is that they don’t needconstant validation and repair, which isexpensive, and can disrupt theatreprocedures if reworking is delayed.

Lastly, there is the issue ofreplacement capital with reusableunits, as multiple sets are required tocope with high patient numbers. This iseven more expensive whenreprocessing is done away from theclinical location, which increases thecost over the funding estimates.

These cumulative cost-saving andpatient benefits are being noticed farand wide. During a recent internationalENT symposium in London – the 27thPolitzer Society – leading surgeons

from across Europe expressed interestin using DTR Medical’s single-useinstruments in their own clinicalpractise. Some delegates were so

committed to these potential benefits, that they placed orders during themeeting.

Single-use surgical instruments arenot designed to replace all re-usableitems, as they are most effective whenused selectively to resolve acombination of the above factors.Managers of sterilisation serviceswelcome the disposable items as theyhelp them to combat the issues facedby utilising re-usable instruments.

For instance, validating the sterility oflong lengths of tubing is oftenproblematic: DTR Medical eradicatesthis problem by supplying its rangeof pre-cut lengths of sterilesilicone tubing, which are nowbeing sold as far afield as NewZealand.

To help hospital efficiency,single-use disposableinstruments must be of aconsistently high quality, andbe readily available at alltimes. DTR Medical takesparticular care to ensurethat every instrumentmeets specification. Tokeep up with thedemands of their clients, the company iscontinually improvingand re-evaluating its

systems. They recentlychanged theirmethod ofmanufacturing aseries of medical

instruments - the Frazier SuctionHandle Range – in order to allow forgreater flexibility and efficiency. Therange now includes two and four tip

fenestrations, and is used across mostsurgical specialities. This modificationto the manufacturing process hasenabled the potential for more lines ofproducts. A similar approach has beenused to produce a range of sterilesingle-use Tibbs Arterial Cannula, which are used in many vascularprocedures.

Growing international demand meansDTR Medical is looking forward to thefuture, and is creating newpartnerships with Welsh Universities todeliver major new lines, includingdevelopments in gynaecologicalsurgery.

Maintain your Equilibrium: acalming solution for ‘stressed’consumers

Boots Equilibrium® is a foodsupplement which aims to help peoplemanage the pressures of modern life.It contains a unique patentedingredient, Lactium®, which canprovide calming support to help withthe stresses and strains of everydaylife. Lactium is a bio-protein isolatedfrom milk which has been studiedextensively for over ten years and hasrelaxing properties that reduce andregulate stress-related troublesnaturally.

Lactium is now available in the UK forthe first time in Boots Equilibrium. It isoffered in two different formats: aconvenient once-a-day capsule in 7 or14 day packs and a comforting hotchocolate drink.

Initial developmentsLactium was first developed byresearch scientists in the 1990s. It hasshown proven efficacy on humans in sixclinical studies using validatedbiological indicators and randomised,double-blind and placebo controlledprocedures.

The Boots Centre for Innovation (BCI)team was introduced to Lactium by aCheshire company, Fayrefield FoodTec,which specialises in providinginnovative food ingredients. FayrefieldFoodTec presented the BCI with anumber of novel ingredientopportunities that it believed could be

appropriate for new health andwellness products.

The BCI investigated the claims andscience behind all the opportunitiesand quickly established a technicalinterest in Lactium and its calmingproperties. It was a food-grade,patented product that represented abreakthrough in the field of nutrition.

Meeting a consumer needThe BCI had identified sleep, stress andenergy as a sector with a key unmethealthcare need and was looking forsolutions to address this market inresponse to customer demand.

The organisation spoke to expertson the mechanics of sleep and thelinks to everyday stresses causedby modern lives, and alsocommissioned research to identifythe products consumers are happyto use. This revealed a reluctanceto use traditional sleeping pillsand a preference for supplementsand drinks.

Consumers want tailoredsolutions for their individual needswhich will help them relax andunwind before bed and have an

uninterrupted night’s sleep. Thisincludes both quick fixes for temporaryproblems, such as to help them sleepwhen they have a cold, and solutionswhich deal with the root causes forlong term sufferers.

Lactium appeared to have considerablepotential in this market, provided thatsuitable product formulations could bedeveloped.

BCI’s role in the developmentBCI began by establishing Lactium’sscientific credibility. They then workedwith colleagues in the Boots healthcareteam to assess the commercialopportunity for Boots.

Having concluded that a potentialmarket existed, BCI introducedFayrefield FoodTec to the AllianceBoots product development team andthe businesses worked together to

develop product formulations usingLactium. Twenty months later, the twoproduct formats were launched toconsumers.

Gail Eastaugh, the BCI’s businessdevelopment manager, comments:“This is a great example of how theBCI can take external innovation whichis supported by thorough clinicalevidence and, using Boots’ expertise informulation, marketing and packaging, develop a winning product for ourcustomers.”

Steve Timms, sales and businessdevelopment director from FayrefieldFoodTec, said: “Developing theEquilibrium product and bringing it tomarket has been much easier than Ihad expected, with the team at BCIsupporting me every step of the way. They have a great deal of expertise, and without their support and the openapproach from BCI the whole processwould have been a lot tougher.”

The products were launched inSeptember 2009, and are selling well.Boots was so confident aboutEquilibrium with Lactium that theinitial launch was supported with a‘feel the difference or your moneyback’ guarantee on seven-day packs ofEquilibrium, allowing customers toexperience the benefits forthemselves.

Boots healthcare expert Gavin Staintonconcludes: “Boots Equilibrium withLactium offers anyone who feels undereveryday pressure an aid to deal withit. The expertise behind this productmakes it one of the most excitinglaunches this decade.”
