The terminal differentiation of the epidermis leads to the formation of the strong cornified layer. This layer of the epidermis essentially performs the role of skin barrier. The differentiated keratinocytes that form the stratum corneum are attached to one another by mechanical bonds: desmosomes. Cross-linked structures are generally prepared using heat and in the presence of a catalyst known as a crosslinking agent.
