The University of Western Australia (UWA) offers Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Podiatric Medicine courses at postgraduate level. This means students are required to complete an undergraduate bachelor’s degree before completing the UWA postgraduate qualification. On completion, graduates will have both an undergraduate and postgraduate degree, ensuring they have a well-rounded education as well as the specialist skills needed in their professional career.

Pathways to a health professional qualification There are two entry pathways for postgraduate study in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Podiatric Medicine:• Direct Pathway (for school leavers) • Graduate entry (for graduates with a university degree)

UWA’s Direct Pathway allows high-achieving school leavers to apply at the same time for their bachelor’s degree and postgraduate professional degree. Entry is on a competitive basis, and applicants must not have commenced tertiary studies, including university degree studies or vocational training at diploma level or above.

Eligibility and admission requirements for all applicants • For applicants to be considered a domestic applicant,

they must be either Australian or New Zealand citizens or a permanent resident of Australia.

• All applicants must meet UWA’s entry requirement for English language competence (ELC). study.uwa.edu.au/elc

• An applicant is deemed ineligible for a Direct Pathway if they have commenced tertiary studies (and have results for those studies) prior to commencement of their undergraduate degree.

• All applicants offered a place in a Direct Pathway to study Medicine, Dentistry, Podiatric Medicine or Pharmacy at UWA must complete their undergraduate degree at UWA with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 5.5 for Medicine and Dentistry and 5.0 for Podiatric Medicine and Pharmacy.

Important notesApplicant contact detailsIt is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure their TISC details are correct, the details are their own personal details and their email address can be accessed at all times. Communication by UWA Admissions staff will be made to applicants using their details supplied in TISC. This includes the predicted ATAR form which will be emailed via the email address on TISC. Applicants are also notified one to two weeks prior to an interview via the email address on TISC.

UCAT ANZ UWA test admission requirementIn 2019, UWA will use your cumulative overall results from the four cognitive subtests for ranking with no minimum section requirements. UWA will not factor your Situational Judgement band for selection purposes in 2019. Note: from 2020 there may be different UCAT ANZ results required for ranking of applicants at UWA.

Interview periodsStudents are strongly advised NOT to book family holidays during interview periods. No consideration will be given to students who are unable to attend for this reason. UWA Admissions staff need to be advised via a letter from your school if a school trip has been planned for this interview period.

UWA academics and students embedded in these organisations

UWA’s Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Aspire UWA and the Rural Clinical School of WA have mentored and supported students from Rural and Broadway schools for many years. To qualify under the Broadway UWA program, a Western Australian secondary school must meet one or more of the following criteria:• be located in regional or remote Western Australia;• be in metropolitan Perth and have a three-year average ICSEA

score at or below the WA median and/or;• be identified as an Aspire UWA School.

How does the program work?• Information sessions and workshops will be facilitated in

UWA-identified Rural and Broadway schools at a time suitable to the schools, and where there is interest from Year 11 and 12 students with a predicted ATAR of 90+.

• Workshops, when possible, consist of hands-on clinical sessions e.g. plastering and suturing, interactive dental and medical scenarios.

• Ongoing mentoring support is provided during the admission process, prior to the commencement of and during university studies.

• Point-of-contact student support is provided for the Rural and Broadway schools, career advisers and students.

UCAT supportMentoring and support will be provided prior to sitting the UCAT for all students who have applied.

Additional support for rural students:• Subsidised flights and accommodation are available for rural

students who will need to fly to Perth to sit the UCAT. Students wishing to take advantage of this financial assistance must be prepared to sit the test in Perth on either Wednesday 10 July 2019 or Tuesday 16 July 2019. Flights will only be organised on the day before these dates and returning the afternoon of the test. Accommodation, dinner and an information session will be organised for the evenings of 9 July 2019 or 15 July 2019.

• A dinner and information session will be held in Bunbury prior to sitting the UCAT.

• A lunch, UCAT information session and personal development workshop will be held for Broadway students on 29 June 2019.

TISC/application guidanceAssistance is given to students, including advice on applying through TISC with preference order, and the application process for the Direct Pathway quotas.

Interview support• Information sessions will be held for both Rural and Broadway

students who have met the UCAT threshold and are predicted to meet the required minimum ATAR.

• Mentoring and support will be provided throughout the interview process.

• Accommodation and travel subsidies are available for Rural students.

ATAR adjustmentEligible students with an ATAR of 93 or above who are applying for a Broadway Direct Pathway (or who attend a rural school) will receive a positive adjustment to their selection rank. UWA has endorsed the Commonwealth Government policy position that low socio-economic status is the overarching disadvantage, and has modelled Broadway UWA to take account of different levels of school-based disadvantage.

For the application of adjustments, schools have been divided into two groups: Tier A Broadway-identified schools at or below the WA median ICSEA score; and Tier B is all other Broadway-identified schools. study.uwa.edu.au/broadway

Students do not need to make a separate application to Broadway UWA. TISC will identify all eligible Broadway applicants and adjust their selection rank automatically. Applicants will be notified of the adjustment in their universities admission advice letter, issued by TISC.

Applicants who have commenced tertiary studies or do not qualify for a Direct Pathway, may work towards graduate entry into a postgraduate professional degree.

An applicant’s undergraduate degree can be in any chosen field of study; however, some prerequisites apply for Podiatric Medicine and Pharmacy (page 2). There are no restrictions placed on the length of time since the completion of the bachelor’s degree. The Faculty Admissions Office considers all Australian bachelor’s degrees equally and does not give preference or apply scaling to any particular degree or university. Qualifications obtained outside Australia are assessed on the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition.
