now become necessary. Mr. William Bird, surgeon to theinstitution, and one of its founders, spoke on the subject ; II ndthe President warmly appealed for general support. Thehospital is one of increasing usefulness and repute.ALLEGED BREACH OF THE QUARANTINE ACT.--Mr. ’,

George T. Sandiford, late acting surgeon on board the shipFlying Cloud, conveying passengers from England to Australia, was charged before the magistrates of the police-court at Bris-bane, with having given false information to the proper officerwith reference to the health of the passengers on board that.hip, by which a contagious disease had been introduced atBrisbane. Dr. Hohbs, the officer of health, deposed to havingquestioned Mr. Sandiford, and received satisfactory iufo:ma-tion as to the health of the passengers, and had also examinedthe log- book and t.he hospital" on board the ship, as well asseveral of the sick on board, without suspecting the existenceof fever. The passengers were landed, and in consequence ofthe appearance of fever among them, it was believed that notonly had fever existed on board, but that false answers hadbeen given to the questions put to Mr. Sandiford, and falseentries made in the log-book. After an examination of fourdays the accused was committed for trial, bail being acceptedfor his appearance.

CERTIFICATES OF DEATH FROM DRUGGISTS.-An inquesthas been recently held at Moxley, near Bilston, on a child ofeighteen months old, who had taken medicine received fromMr. Woolley, a druggist of that place. It appeared that Mr.Woolley, who is unqualified, acts in concert with Mr. Larkin,a surgeon, of Bilston ; his general practice in cases of deathbeing to prepare a certificate for Mr. Larkin’s signature. Thisrule does not appear to have been adhered to in the presentcase. A post-mortem examination by Mr. W. C. Garmanshowed that death had arisen from intense inflammation, anda verdict was returned accordingly. The coroner, however, strongly censured Mr. Woolley for giving the certificate, andsaid that he would give notice to the registrar not to receivecertincates in future from unqualified persons. According tothe strict letter of the law, the certificate should under thecircumstances have been one stating that the deceased diedwithout medical attendance. Under the Registration Act it isdoubtful whether the registrar can refuse to register a certificateof death so worded.HEALTH OF LONDON DURING THE WEEK ENDING

SATURDAY, MAY 2lST.-The returns of London show an in-crease of more than 100 in the deaths of the week that endedlast Saturday over those of any of the three previous weeks. The number in last week was 1421. The increase amongstyoung persons is to a considerable extent caused by measles, the fatal cases of Mhiob rose from 50 to 87. There were 65deaths referred to typhus, typhoid, and gastric fever, &c.
