EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVESVIVA celebrates a decade of providing the leading multispecialty, collaborative education symposium with a

focus solely on peripheral vascular diseases.

We have remained true to our original goal of teaching those interested in providing the highest level of

patient care via an unbiased, comprehensive educational forum covering all aspects of vascular medicine

and intervention.

At the conclusion of the course, the targeted learners should be able to:

Understand the current indications, risks, complications, and long-term results of various medical therapies for the treatment of peripheral atherosclerotic vascular disease.

Increase knowledge in critical decision-making and the comprehensive spectrum of care for patients with foot ulcers and threatened limbs.

Increase awareness and understanding of the complete spectrum of interventional therapies for the treatment of patients with aortic complications.

Enhance understanding of venous physiology, anatomy, diseases and management options across a variety of venous territories.

Discuss the diagnosis and management of patients with thoracic aortic disease.

Increase knowledge of contemporary approaches to carotid artery management based on recent evidence-based data from randomized trials.

TARGET AUDIENCEVIVA will be of value to physicians, technologists, physician

assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses who specialize in

interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, vascular

medicine, vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery,

and neuroradiology. VIVA will also offer a new three-day session

designed specifically for cardiovascular healthcare professionals

(including nurses, vascular clinic staff, endovascular operating

room staff, interventional suite staff, nurse practitioners, vascular

technologists and physician assistants) who are interested in the

management of patients with vascular disease. VIVA also welcomes

our podiatric colleagues with a new pre-course session dedicated

SPECIAL EVENTS

GOVERNMENT SUMMIT Wednesday, October 10 at 12:00 pm in Mouton 1

VIVA 12 continues the tradition of collaborating with leaders from the United States Food and Drug Administration

(FDA) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in our “Government Summit.” In the past,

we have highlighted emerging technologies and evaluated challenges and opportunities from the perspective

of our colleagues in the FDA and CMS. This year, for the first time and in keeping with the expanded involvement

of our international colleagues, leading representatives from the Japanese Pharmaceuticals and Medical

Devices Agency (PMDA) will join us. We will compare and contrast regulatory policies and practices and

highlight how collaboration has led the way to novel trials, which may result in multinational device approval.

Opinions on approaches to drug-coated balloons, renal denervation, and management of critical limb ischemia

will be discussed.

ThE VIVA ATLAS AWARD: “A TeACheR, LeAdeR, And SCholAR”

The VIVA ATLAS award is a distinction bestowed upon an extraordinary individual who has demonstrated leadership, mentorship, and scholarly activity that has profoundly affected the care of patients with vascular disease. VIVA is proud to recognize John A. Spittell Jr., MD as the recipient of this year’s prestigious award.

ThE VIVA ATLAS AWARD PRESENTATION – JOhN A. SPITTELL JR., MD

Thursday 8:40 am in the General Session

John Spittell Jr., MD (known as “Jack” by his admirers and friends alike) is the 2012

recipient of the VIVA ATLAS award. Since the ATLAS award is given to those giants in

the field of vascular medicine and intervention who have transformed our ability to care for patients through

teaching and scholarly activity, there is no one more deserving than Dr. Spittell. After completing his medical

school training at the University of Maryland, he was a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and subsequent

to that, completed an internal medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic Foundation. In 1961, he became the

head of the section of Peripheral Vascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic, and since then, has held multiple national

positions in esteemed organizations, including Chair of the Board of Governors of the American College of

Physicians. Dr. Spittell has published extensively in the field of vascular medicine, teaching legions of housestaff

the importance of a comprehensive physical examination when determining the appropriate treatment for

patients with vascular disease. With his keen eye and wit, Dr. Spittell has shaped the field of vascular medicine

and intervention by bringing together all specialties to offer comprehensive care for patients with vascular

disease. Many will remember the incredible lectures delivered by Dr. Spittell at the American College of

Cardiology symposia, as well as his role as key faculty for the Isner Heart House symposia held in Washington,

DC every year. It is an honor to bestow the 2012 ATLAS award to Dr. Jack Spittell, the penultimate teacher,

leader, and scholar.

VIVAPRE-SYMPOSIA–MONDAY,OCTOBER8,2012These sessions are included in VIVA tuition.

VENOUSINTERVENTIONS:LEGS,LUNGS,ANDNECk1:00 - 6:00 pm in Mouton 1

This course will provide a comprehensive look at some of the hot topics in venous interventions, one of

the fastest growing areas of vascular intervention. do you want to know which of your patients should get

pharmacomechanical thrombectomy for deep vein thrombosis, and how best to do this? Are you considering

interventions for massive PE? Is there a difference between RF and Laser for varicose veins? And lastly, what

about CCSVI - will you be doing this, or should you leave it to someone else?

See page 19 for detailed agenda and CME information.

CRITICALLIMBISChEMIA(CLI)&LIMBPRESERVATION 1:00 - 5:30 pm in Lafite 7

This new half-day session is specifically designed for podiatrists, vascular specialists, cardiovascular healthcare

and other medical professionals who care for patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAd). This symposium will focus on

patients with the most severe form of PAd, critical limb ischemia (CLI), and opportunities for limb preservation.

CLI is an under-recognized problem that is growing due to the increasingly aging population, diabetes,

preponderance of metabolic syndrome, and increasing number of chronic kidney disease patients. A dedicated,

multispecialty faculty will provide a basic and in-depth review of contemporary diagnostic, clinical, therapeutic,

and programmatic considerations for the care of patients with CLI.

The program goal is to provide insights and tactical information about the manifestations, diagnosis, and patient

care considerations for this population. didactic and case-based presentations will provide an opportunity for

extensive discussion and interaction with the faculty. See page 20 for detailed agenda and CME information.

ThEBUSINESSOFhEALThCARE1:00 - 5:00 pm in Petrus 2

VIVA 12, our 10th anniversary, is an important milestone. As the leading educator in the field of vascular medicine

and intervention, VIVA continues to integrate critical components to improve the vascular specialists’ ability to care

for patients. As public policy evolves and health care reform becomes a reality, physicians are challenged with a

new vernacular….CEd….ACO…PCC…AQC….

Where do vascular specialists fit in the new world order? What is the intersection between health care reform

evolution and the provider? What must physicians understand?

And how can this all be done in an ethical and appropriate environment? VIVA tackles these tough topics and

more with internationally recognized experts, industry leaders, physicians involved in the evolution of health care,

and invited guests, including a renowned professor from Harvard Business School!

See page 21 for detailed agenda. Continuing education credits are not available for this session.

It’s never the wrong time to practice the basics while learning tips and pearls from the pros–and this year,

following a wildly popular response to its debut in 2011, VIVA offers a newly buffed training experience as

part of an intense two-day program designed to upgrade your procedural skills through tactical and

strategic sessions held in a no-nonsense situation room setting.

On Wednesday, enter ThePresentationBunker, where it’s a non-stop serving of cases, and nothing but

cases ALL dAY! Whether you choose to enlist in the whole tour or join for instruction focused on a

particular vascular territory, your hard-nosed drill leaders are determined to expand the boundaries of

your current understanding.

The Strategies sessions wrap up on Thursday when the council chamber becomes

ThehurtLocker, where the realities of complications are exposed and dissected by

expert vascular operatives who know only too well, the situation: Armageddon was

yesterday – today we have a serious problem.
