FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, NASHVILLE 1
In the event that a worshipper is in need of medical assistance, the head usher will coordinate the response using the following process:
1. Dispatch two ushers to the victim to assess his/her needs. 2. If the ushers find the victim to be unresponsive, he/she will designate three additional ushers to:
Call 911. (Direct emergency personnel to come to front doors of sanctuary.)
Bring the AED and Oxygen to the victim. (AED cabinet is not locked; pull firmly to open.)
Obtain personal information about the victim to be given to emergency personnel (name, age, known medical problems, etc.).
3. Make sure victim and rescuer are in a safe place. 4. Check for signs of circulation (normal breathing, movement, coughing). If the victim is unresponsive and…
… breathing normally — Move to narthex to provide first aid and administer oxygen.
... NOT breathing normally — Immediately start CPR and continue until AED device is in place:
Turn AED unit on and follow voice prompts.
Apply Pads to victim’s bare chest (if victim is under 8 years of age, use Child Pads).
If victim has a medication patch on chest, remove patch with gloved hand and dry chest.
If skin is wet, dry skin with towel located in pouch attached to Adult AED Pad.
If victim has an implanted pacemaker, apply AED Pad one-inch away from pacemaker.
If a shock is indicated, the device will charge itself and advise “press the shock button.” Before pressing the shock button, say “Stand Clear” and check to be sure no one is touching the victim.
After device delivers shock or if no shock is indicated, check for breathing and signs of circulation. If none is found, resume CPR. Do not take pads off victim.
Continue with AED and CPR until victim becomes responsive, shows signs of circulation, or emergency help arrives.
If victim becomes responsive:
Stay with victim. Remain calm and assure them that help is on the way.
DO NOT remove AED pads from victim.
DO NOT allow emergency personnel to take defibrillator (AED ECG data will be downloaded by Premedics).
5. Once it is safe to remove the victim from the sanctuary, he/she may be taken to the narthex or to a room in
the administration wing for further attention until emergency personnel arrives. 6. After EMS has left the scene:
Return the oxygen unit to the AED/Oxygen cabinet pushing in pin to stop the air flow and disposing of the oxygen mask.
Return AED to the Hospitality Center and dispose of the AED Pad system used in the AED deployment.
Program coordinator to contact Premedics (846-2300 or [email protected]) to initiate post-event services (ECG download, new Adult Pad, batteries, oxygen mask and AED Usage Report to be filled out as well as consultation with Premedics clinical team regarding response).
