600 ’COUNTER PRESCRIBING. MB. T. F. ABRAHAM, President of the Chemists’ Association at Liverpool, in his inaugural address last week, after criticisieg several parts of the Pharmacy Act, referred to the question of counter-prescribing. lIe thought that chemists would act wisely not to go beyond their province, and to refrain from prescribing in cases that should be dealt with by those only whose education had qualified them for the duty of indicating the proper remedies for disease. A Student of Medicine, assistant to a qualified practitioner, was called to see the patient of another medical man, in consequence of the delay in his arrival, and the urgency of the case. Learning that another practitioner had been sent for, he declined to take the case out of his hands, but pre- scribed and even supplied medicine pending his arrival. About an hour after our correspondent’s visit the assistant of the practitioner first sent for arrived, and on being told of what had happened, and of the wish of our correspondent to have his visit and medicine regarded as given in ’behalf of his principal, he replied that " his principal would not accept any attendance at his hands"-the hands of our correspondent. The assistant who spoke these words did not know whether our correspondent was qua- lified or not. We do not see that this makes any difference. An unqua- lified assistant may be courteous. He certainly ought to be so. When he is both courteous and. kind, it is a pity that his oflers should nut be received in the spirit in which they are given. Of course we are speaking on an ex-parte statement; but according to this, our correspondent’s behaviour seems to have been perfect. D. M. B.-To enumerate the instruments which should be contained in a complete case of eye instruments would not be easy. Some surgeons can perform all ophthalmic operations with less than a dozen tools, while ,, others require at least fifty. Several manufacturers fit up special cases of eye instruments; but where there are so many good makers, we would rather not say " who is the best." R. S.-The Secretary of the Plymouth Day Nursery is Miss Amy Prideaux, 5, West Hoe-terrace, Plymouth. J. H. W. should consult a physician. COMMUNICATIONS, LETTERS, &c., have been received from - Sir J.
