look forward to this upcoming year as your president of the Medical Alumni Association (MAA).

Dr. Martin Mahoney, our outgoing president, will be a tough act to follow. He marked this past year with

some terrific achievements—most notably the launching of the MAA web site www.medicalalumni.

buffalo.edu. This is a very user-friendly interactive web site with resources to find classmates, fellow

members, the current officers of MAA, an alumni calendar that includes student events, and an easy link

to the Practice Giving campaign website. I strongly encourage you to take a look and explore it.

Reunion Weekend (May 4–5) this year was a great success. On Friday evening, we sponsored a

cocktail party for all classes on UB’s South Campus, with tours of the medical school and a capella

singing by the Buffalo Chips. Over 200 people attended Spring Clinical Day, which featured the

Harrington Lecture speaker, Dr. Michael Roizen, popular author of Real Age, radio show host, and

regular guest on many broadcasts including the Oprah Winfrey Show (see opposite page). We had a

new format for Spring Clinical Day; it featured student research presentations and a light breakfast,

followed by our speaker and then lunch at the Adam’s Mark Hotel. We hope to hear from attendees

to see whether this shorter format is preferable to the multi-lecture and sometimes multidisciplinary

style of prior years. The change in format was a response to alumni suggestions from past Spring

Clinical Days, and we hope everyone likes it.

On Saturday, May 5, more than 250 alumni and guests continued the reunion celebration at the

Adam’s Mark with dinner and dancing. Thirteen classes from as early as 1942 were represented. I was

impressed with the collegiality and shared enthusiasm so obvious in the room that night. Everyone

seemed to be having fun and enjoying the chance to renew friendships and reminisce.

We welcome suggestions for future Reunion Weekend and Spring Clinical Day events with respect

to format and possible speakers.

I look forward to a productive year as your president. The MAA tries to remain relevant and help-

ful to our membership and to the students we serve as an important part of our mission. This year, we

plan to expand our Community Physician Luncheons for students by involving residents. We also plan

to team up with Polity on the ambitious project of making UB’s South Campus smoke free.

This year’s speaker was Michael F. Roizen, MD, a Buffalo native, and cofounder and chair of the Real Age, Inc.

Scientific Advisory Board. The topic of his lecture focused on his New York Times’ number-one bestselling book,

“Real Age: Are You As Young As You Can Be?” in which he addressed diet and life-style changes that improve health.
