media.REIFF

What is media.REIFF?

Media.REIFF is an open source web based relational database, under development since 2004.

The database structure has been kept simple to provide for different use cases. Because it is being used by all architecture students at RWTH Aachen University, it was important that no special training is needed.

Currently it is used for the collection of student work in different subjects of architecture as well as for research purposes in the fields of architectural history, urban history and archaeology.

The projects shown are projects from different chairs of the Faculty of Architecture: - Aachen Center for Documentation and Conservation (ACDC), Prof. Michael Jansen - Conservation (Denkmalpflege), Prof. Christian Raabe - Visual Form (Bildnerische Gestaltung), Prof. Thomas Schmitz

Reiff is the name of a professor for free hand drawing who sponsored the construction of the Reiff museum 1904, the faculty building of the Architecture Faculty at RWTH Aa-chen University.

2003/4 ACDC: Mohenjo-Daro Image Browser published 1997; Reproductions of the Sindh Volumes 1916–1940 + Old/New- Series and Aerialshots 1979–1984; Genera-ted but static HTML pages on CD-ROM Project specific structure and display, not many links, difficult to update, no real da-tabase because it was on CD-ROM

History. Why did we develop this database?

2004/5 ACDC: Afghanistan Monuments Photographs and sketch maps from campaigns 2003/5; Object database, web-based Categories were introduced but hardcoded which did not allow for much flexiblity

Entry of data

Each object can be added via a form with properties (times, coordinates, etc.) depen-ding on the category of the object.

For the mass import of files and folders, an import module exists. This works with a Samba server. @todo: add WebDAV server support.

Data can be imported and synchronized on demand from foreign sources: - ISO 3166 country codes - Seminars from the Faculty of Architecture - Import of Afghanistan Site Register - Import of Mohenjo Daro CD-ROM

(Form for monuments)

Search

Currently, there are two possibilites for searching:

- general search (topper right corner): searches for names and descriptions of objects, inherited infor-mation will be found as well (e. g. name of a mo-nument might find photographs of a monument as well); currently, only file objects will be found

- folder based search (below list) will search for all objects inside one folder

Filters allow to jump directly to objects starting with a certain letter or belonging to a certain category.

For the project in Sindh province, an automatical text extraction tool was created. It allows to show different keywords in different languages and to search through them.
