aus einem Fonds für außergewöhnliche Auf-
wendungen, wie Susan Combs, texanische
Staatssekretärin der Finanzen, bestätigte.
Als Hauptinvestor wurde mit Red McCombs
ein wohlhabender Geschäftsmann gefun-
den, der bereits erfolgreich in Sportarten
engagiert war. McCombs war seinerzeit
Eigentümer der NBA-Teams Denver Nuggets
und der San Antonio Spurs (Basketball)
und der Minnesota Vikings (Football). Er ist
Mitgründer von Clear Channel Communi-
cations und war an fast 400 Unternehmen
beteiligt, darunter McComs Automotive
Group und McCombs Energy. Die McCombs
Business School der Universität Austin trägt
seit einer Spende von 50 Millionen US$ im
Jahre 2000 seinen Namen.
an Schüler wendet. Hellmund ist nach
eigenen Angaben ein alter Bekannter von
Ecclestone.
holen.
Weitere Partner von Hellmund sind Moto-
GP-Legende Kevin Schwantz und Prophet
Capital Management.
Die Promoter erwarten Umsätze für die
Region in Höhe von 300 Millionen US$ pro
Jahr. Gestützt wird diese Prognose mit den
Zahlen aus den Rennen in Malaysia: Dort
soll das Rennen 2008 221 Millionen US$
»generiert haben, in Bahrain 394 Millionen
US$.
The Formula One has reached an agreement
with Full Throttle Promotions for a Grand
Prix in Austin, Texas, from 2012 until 2021.
Promoter Tavo Hellmund (left photo below,
talking with B. Ecclestone) presented the
building ground about 10 km (six miles)
southeast of the Austin Bergstrom Interna-
tional Airport and his main investor, Red
McCombs (right photo) to the public at the
end of July.
Hellmund visited the British GP together
with Texas state comptroller Susan Combs to
underline the support of the State of Texas.
Combs downplayed potential criticism of the
planned U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas,
by insisting that the deal is done.
Combs has committed the state to a $25
million per year payment from the Texas
Special Events Fund. The fund is designed
to cover expenses related to major events,
and that is believed to represent the annual
fee paid to F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone for
the right to host the race. The state is not
involved in the actual development of the
circuit. Local media had suggested that
not all tax payers would be supportive but
Combs confirmed »The legislation is already
passed; it‘s a done deal. Combs foresees a
big impact for Texas. »It‘s going to put Texas
on the international and global map, it‘s go-
ing to put Austin on the international and
global map, and it will brand Texas as the
home of cars.
Hellmund insists that plans are moving
ahead. »We‘re almost done with the [circuit]
design stuff. We‘ve changed a few things
based on the site, and the biggest thing is
trying to finish the proper plan for the FIA
Circuit Commission. I believe that‘s in Sep-
tember. [F1 track designer Hermann] Tilke‘s
people have been in Austin pretty much
nonstop and have met with our architects
and our contractors. We‘re hammer down.
Motorsport is not a new thing to Hellmund
since his father was a promoter of races in
Mexico. Main investor Red McCombs is a
well-known business man in the Lone Star
state. He donated $50 Million to the Univer-
sity of Austin in 2000, naming their busi-
ness department McCombs Business School
of Business science. McCombs, a wealthy
San Antonio car dealer, previously was
an owner of the San Antonio Spurs NBA
basketball team and the NFL’s Minnesota
Vikings. Hellmund’s group, Full Throttle
Productions, is slated to stage an F1 race for
10 years, beginning in 2012. He is or was
involved in about 400 companies, including
his own McCombs Automotive Group and
McCombs Energy. Other associates to Hell-
mund are MotoGP legend Kevin Schwantz
and Prophet Capital Management.
Predictions are that up to 300,000 visitors
could come to the races, with revenues of
up to $300 million per year for the region.
The F1 event would be almost as big as the
Superbowl Footbal final, but on an annual
basis as compared to the final taking place
in Texas only once in a decade.
Within an area of 180 miles around Austin
there are three airports with about 180 inter-
national flights per day in total, 22 million
people living there and over 250,000 hotel
rooms available.
This is the first time in Formula One’s his-
tory in the United States that a facility is
being purposebuilt. The proposed track in
Austin is going to be constructed specifically
for Grand Prix races but other racing series
will also be able to use it.
Nach mehreren vergeblichen
Anläufen, in den USA wieder ein
Rennen auszurichten, hat die
Formel 1 nun einen Hafen in Austin, Texas,
gefunden. Mittlerweile wurde auch das Ge-
lände offiziell bekanntgegeben, auf dem die
neue Rennstrecke errichtet werden soll.
In nur 10 km Entfernung vom internationa-
len Austin Bergstrom International Airport
entfernt liegt der Baugrund, eine Fläche
von 900 acres (ca. 360 Hektar), auch zur
Innenstadt ist es nicht weiter. Das größe-
re Einzugsgebiet von Austin (in der Liste
der größten US-Städte auf Platz 15) lässt
die texanische Stadt durchaus interessant
erscheinen: In einem Umkreis von 300
km liegen mit Houston (viertgrößte Stadt
der USA), San Antonio und Dallas gleich
mehrere Großstädte, in dieser Region leben
über 22 Millionen Menschen und es sind
über 250 000 Hotelzimmer verfügbar. Die
Anbindung an den amerikanischen Flugver-
kehr nach Kanada, Mittel- und Südamerika
ist mit täglich 130 internationalen Flügen
über die Flughäfen der Region gegeben.
Auch das Klima ist mit einem Jahresdurch-
schnitt von 20° Celsius und relativ geringen
Niederschlagsmengen geeignet.
Full Throttle Productions L. P., unterzeich-
net. Ab 2012 soll in Austin der US-Lauf aus-
getragen werden. Fianziell beteiligt sich der
Staat Texas mit jährlich 25 Millionen US$

Dank durchdachter Details
ist die Fehleranfälligkeit deutlich geringer als
bei Standardsystemen. »In der Box ist immer
so viel Hektik, dass leicht etwas verstellt
wird, ohne dass es jemand bemerkt«, sagt
Jürgen Kälberer, der seine Erfahrungen aus
Formel 1 und GT-Sport in die Entwicklung
einfließen ließ. »Mit diesem System sind viele
Fehlerquellen von vorne herein ausgeschlos-
sen.«
Beim Aufbau werden am aufgebockten
Fahrzeug zunächst die Messtische unter
den Radhäusern platziert, die Messräder
angebracht und dann mit Hilfe des Nivellier-
lasers die vier Radlastwaagen justiert. Dabei
unterstützen Kugellager die präzise Ausrich-
tung der Fahrwerksgeometrie, Fehler durch
Reibungsmomente in der Radaufhängung
und am Reifen werden vollständig eliminiert,
die Ergebnisse sind exakt reproduzierbar.
Zudem ist die Feder-Dämpfer-Einheit optimal
erreichbar.
Dank der exakten Lagerung des Fahrzeugs
wird die Vermessung der Radlasten höchst
präzise, die Einstellung deutlich erleichtert.
Da eine einzelne Person alle Schritte vorneh-
men kann, nehmen die Arbeiten weniger Zeit
in Anspruch. Die Einstellwerte können per
Telemetrie mit der Software erfasst, ausge-
wertet und gespeichert werden. Optionale

Perfect precision The new balance and wheel alignment system from Heggemann autosport offers extremely safe and easy handling and can be operated by a single person
Heggemann Autosport from Büren
presents a new system for suspension
measurement. The highprecision
system was developed to definitely avoid faults
while being quickly set up and easy to handle.
The precision of measurement is enhanced
significantly by using measuring wheels. In
contrast to measurement with rim and tyre
the provided units of measurement permit a
reduction of fault tolerances up to around 0.5
mm.
A single person will need only 15 minutes to
establish the system and also the complete
measuring and adjustment procedure can be
operated by one mechanic. Due to elaborate
details the error rate is significantly less than
with standard systems. »There is always a lot
of hectic pace in the pit so that something is
changed easily and nobody will notice it«, says
Jürgen Kälberer who put his experience from
Formula 1 and the GT sport into the develop
ment. »With this system a lot of sources of
error are eliminated just from the start.«
Establishing the system at first the measuring
tables are placed under the wheel house of the
jacked car and then the four wheel load weig
hers are adjusted with the aid of the levelling
laser. Thereby bearings support the precise
alignment of the suspension geometry, faults
caused by frictions in the wheel suspension
and at the tyre are completely eliminated, the
results are accurately repeatable. Furthermore
the spring damper unit is optimally achievab
le.
Due to the accurate positioning of the car the
measurement of the wheel loads is extreme
ly precise, the adjustment is considerably
facilitated. Because only one person can deal
with all tasks these works call on less time. The
adjustment data can be registered, analysed
and accumulated by the software per teleme
try. Optional camber sensors and a mobile
hand display for reading the data simplifies
the work for the mechanic and saves time.
Several teams have already tested the technic
in pratice, in doing so the system was in use
without any electric supply during a whole
race weekend.
Four weighing cells, a loading unit for the
rechargeable battery, four measuring wheels
with an adapter for the bolt pattern of the
vehicle, a levelling laser with tripod and
a notebook with preinstalled software are
components of the package and everthing
is compactly stowed in a robust flightcase.
Optionally four aluminium trestles will help
with the setting if the ground is very bumpy or
if the car will need more ground clearance for
the adjustments. Due to splash guard (IP65)
the construction is allweather suitable. The
technic will be delivered from 22 000 Euros, a
modulation to customerspecific demands is
possible within a fourweek
delivery time. Hannes Plesse, as well an
active race driver, is in charge of the
customer service and the distribution.

Direkt gasoline injection system from Bosch Motorsport
lischen Komponenten (Hochdruckpumpe, Hochdruckeinspritz-
Differentialsperre (eLSD, electronically controlled
limited slip differential) ausgestattet. Sie wird durch
die Getriebeelektronik und die im Getriebe vorhandene
Systemhydraulik angesteuert und kann so die Fahrdynamik
weiter optimieren.
und Kosten«, so Hans-Peter Nett, Getrag All Wheel Drive AB.
One of the recent developments from Bosch Motorsport is design
capability for complete advanced direct injection systems to meet
the Global Race Engine regulations.
The system design by Bosch Motorsport includes a powerful En-
gine Control Unit (ECU), a high pressure fuel injector power stage
unit, as well as hydraulic components (high pressure injection
valves and high pressure fuel pump with integrated fuel demand
control valve). The gasoline direct injection system from Bosch
Motorsport is based on series production Bosch products that are
specially adapted for motorsport use. As such, the system
utilizes the knowledge of one of the world‘s largest origi-
nal equipment manufacturers. Each component benefits
from the extensive and proven expertise of Bosch develop-
ment and prototyping departments.
Thanks to the close cooperation between Bosch Mo-
torsport and the Bosch production development teams,
we are able to provide complete direct injection systems
that work together as a single unit tailored to individual
requirements.

The new Ferrari 458 Italia is equipped with the Getrag Pow-
ershift® 7DCL750 transmission with the world-first of an active
differential lock (eLSD, electronically controlled limited slip diffe-
rential) integrated into a dual clutch transmission. It is actuated
by the transmission electronics and the system hydraulics present
in the transmission and can thus further optimize driving dynamics.
The use of a planetary gear differential and a disk pack arrange-
ment according to the shaft to shaft principle produces an extremely
compact design with low clutch torques. Carbon fiber friction disks
and a shared transmission oil supply guarantee a high thermal load
capacity. The differential does not need separate actuators or an ECU
(electronic control unit) because the dual clutch transmission delivers
the hydraulic pressure needed for actuation and the control strategy of
the differential lock has been integrated into the transmission control
unit. »That combines two positive effects: it helps us to reduce both
installation space and costs,« explained Hans-Peter Nett, Getrag All

Shell hat in einer Demonstrationsanlage in
Wisconsin (USA) einen alternativen Benzin-
Kraftstoff entwickelt.
90% geringer.
Eine kommerzielle Produktion ist noch nicht abzusehen.
Since the start of the Formula One season
in March, the fuel Shell supplied to
Scuderia Ferrari has contained a biofuel
component made from cellulosic ethanol,
an advanced biofuel made from straw.
For the last three races of the season,
the Shell fuel contained both advanced
biofuels. The Virent process uses cata
lysts to convert plant sugars directly into
petrol and petrol blend components. The sugars can be sourced
from more sustainable nonfood raw materials such as corn stover,
wheat straw and sugar cane residue, or from conventional biofuel
feedstocks such as sugar beet, corn, wheat and sugar cane. The
energy content of Virent’s ‘‘biogasoline’’ is the same as or better
than premium petrol and can be blended seamlessly into conventi
onal petrol. In the future this could eliminate the need for any spe
cialized infrastructure, enginemodifications or blending equipment
for use by Shell’s customers.

and
torque (now
3000Nm). At the same
time the engineers at Dino Paoli
managed to reduce the weight of the
