INTRODUCTION TO CHARACTERS

JOEL (Jake Shelvey)Joel is a 21 year old male who only recently has moved away from home for the first time, following the natural death of his foster parents. Due to his own abandonment as a child, he has always been extremely family-orientated, living with

his parents up until they died and being arguably overly reliant upon them. Therefore, after their death and at the beginning of ‘The Basement’, Joel is an insecure, almost-childlike figure who contrasts with the typically dumb, resilient male protagonists of horror films. He firmly

believes in the values of family and tradition – hence his desperation to connect with his lost brother through

renovating the Cumberwell estate – but is easily excitable and passionate. He enjoys birdwatching, films, and adores his newlywed wife, but is insecure and overly protective of

her.

KERRIE (Hannah Zlatkovic)Kerrie is a 20 year old female who works as a nurse at

a local hospital. She is fiercely independent and creative, able to adapt herself to most situations and is very spiritual in her beliefs. Despite this, she is fickle, often flicking from one interest to the next, and could

be described as arrogant in her views towards life. Kerrie loves Joel with all her heart and, despite her

own discomfort and doubts, agreed to let Joel spend a lot of their money renovating the house, and this is

largely because she feels guilty about cheating on him a year or so ago – which Joel still doesn’t know about.

She is quirky, and expresses this through her body language and clothes.

SACK MAN/DEMON/VARIOUS (Xavier Zimnicki)

Xavier Zimnicki will be allocated the task of playing most of the entities haunting the house. This is because I want to limit the amount of actors available on set, allowing me to focus more individually on

each and tell them what I require in more detail. As Xavier is a skilled actor, I do not doubt that he can exude the confliction of anger and confusion that the sack man encapsulates, while also being able to

switch to the sleek, fast, alien movements of the demon haunting the grounds. Each character being played is no less important than either

Joel or Kerrie, with backstories that are tragic, relatable, and altogether very human, and these will be insinuated throughout the film.
