Task 3: Analysis of Previous WorkThe magazine is able to convey a simple message of its content. The main points of the magazine have been highlighted due to it presenting titles of its content. The title is in bold to show the brand of the magazine. It acts as a sign post for potential customers of the magazine as it indicates the brand and its content. The student has done well creating the magazine however there is little information on the magazine which makes it quite blank compared to other magazines. An improvement could be to make it better, such as more information on the front page. This would provide more advertisement, and potentially appeal to more readers. However the content is good and offers a range of topics for people to read. However, the student could of made the magazine more clear, laying out the content better and making the front page more eye-catching, to do this I would spread the content out and having more information on the front.

Target audience: (age range, interests) Although it is a school newsletter you still have to think about your audience and how to appeal to them.

My target audience would be school children; however it would also have to appeal to the parents/guardians of the children who attend the school. So I would have to consider the language I use so children will be able to understand the text.

Possible title ideas: (masthead / title block) What is your magazine going to be called?

Possible title ideas could be; News of the School, Priory News.

Main image: What will be the focal point of your front page, remember, your work “must include a photograph of a student in a medium close-up”

The main picture of the front will be a picture of a student who attends the Hitchin consortium.

Main cover line: What will be the main story?

Additional key images: What other images will be on your front cover? Remember, it is a school magazine.

There will be an image of the school logo. As well as the following schools who are included in the Hitchin consortium. As well as any advertisement, or alerts for school trips etc.

Additional cover lines: Other features, stories or selling points which will be inside the magazine, these need to be audience appropriate.

“The Black Blazers” or possibly “Busy bus times”.

Typography: (style, size, colour of copy) Think about the writing and the style of the writing on your front page.

The style of text will be the same throughout, however the masthead and all additional cover lines will have a unique font/size/colour. In accordance to a colour scheme.

Background colour/image: What will be in the background, remember you don’t want to take the focus away from the main image

The background will be colourful and make the text easier to read and understand.

Technical considerations: (equipment, setting, props, costume, lighting) Be realistic and creative, think about what you have access to and how you could use it.

I could use the computer’s which are available at home/school and Photoshop which is a tool which will allow me to manipulate pictures and create my front cover.

What have I learnt?I have learned to use Photoshop correctly I was able to learn how to complete certain functions of the software. For example I was able to make overlays by rasterizing the picture so I could create a clipping match and edit the image. I had also learnt to use the “CNTRL+ALT+Z” command to reverse my actions, this was able to make the production of my magazine cover faster.

I have also learnt to how to properly crop pictures and using the crop tool and other slicing tools which are available. This particularly helped me to edit pictures more neatly and precisely. This made it easier to have multiple pictures on the magazine blended together and faded.

ProcessThe process for creating my magazine was firstly we conducted research into magazines, we then analysed them and learnt from them , we considered what made a good magazine. I was able to take a lot from the magazines. Next we created a proposal form of the elements needed to create a school newsletter/magazine.After this we then created a draft of the magazine, I drafted mine in Photoshop ; using various tools to merge the pictures to create a final crisp front cover. We then created a contents page using Photoshop.
