Promotional purposes

Explanation of the promotional purposes of music videos:

The main purpose of music videos is to sell the song and the band, to get the song stuck in people’s heads. To sell the image of the artist, also to create revenue for the record company

For example, the more successful the band, the more money put in to the music video as they are guaranteed a huge profit, Roadrunner Records’ most successful bands have a huge budget and get it back in a few days, examples of this are Metallica and Slipknot.

Extension of income

How the artist gets money from music videos:

The artist gets money from the music videos as the more people that see the music video, the more money goes to the record company, and the record company pays the artist. So it is a massive cycle, the more people that buy the cd’s or buy the albums through music services, such as Spotify and I tunes.

Psy, the artist who created the song Gangnam Style, after the song went viral on Youtube, the share price went up 568.8%, but that was one billion views ago. One of the ways an artist still makes money years after their biggest hit, people still go back and watch the video, making that person have more income for years after,

Extension of outlets

How the artist makes money from the music videos:

The main way that artists make money other than through I Tunes, Spotify and through CD revenue, is through the television, so shows such as MTV, KERRANG and SCUZZ, the channel pay the artist to show their song and music video, and each view the channel gets of the song, a large sum of the revenue goes straight to the record company, who then pay the artists for their work. The biggest thing about money making in the music industry is popularity, if an artist doesn’t have any popularity, they wont make much money compared to a highly popular artist.

Procudcing companies with other companies such as KERRANG to ensure the viewing of a specific song or artist and set genres. SCUZZ is purely metal, nu-metal and rock music.

Synergy

Synergy is when two medias are put together in a piece of work that relate to each other, for example, a famous actor in Hollywood, or a rich man in a mansion.

The more similar the two medias, the more likely a wider audience will see the video, A popular example is of Paramore’s song Decode was featured in one of the Twilight films, making the band more popular amongst younger audiences, after the film was released, the music video of the song gained 77 million views on Youtube.

Synergy often is used to promote two things, for example a band and a film.

Product placement is also used massively in films and music videos, for example the James Bond songs that are in the films often advertise British things, such as Rolex watches and Aston Martins.

Producer strategies

Major label and independent strategies.

Producers often involve partnerships in other companies, companies often create a partnership with YouTube, at the start or end of every video there will be an advert, sometimes the adverts are music videos, this creates an additional revenue. It allows music companies to distribute artists music over the internet across different platforms. You can even find adverts on your phone, Facebook, twitter, apps, almost on anything electronic, to get a wider audience.

Another way a producer spreads the image of an artist is by advertising concerts or events involving the artist. Sometimes a producer gets a more popular artist to work with a less popular, often newly rising artist to increase their popularity through another audience.

Producers also pay other companies that show music such as MTV, and the repetitive showing of an artist will make them massively popular, in turn giving the producers back their money and most likely even more income.
