MEDIA RELEASE Tuesday 1st November 2016 NATIONAL FOLK FESTIVAL CELEBRATES PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL CANBERRA ARTIST The National Folk Festival is delighted to announce a partnership with acclaimed local Canberra artist Paul Summerfield who has been engaged to provide the Festival’s artwork for the next four years. Based in the ACT, Paul Summerfield’s work is fantastical and richly illustrative and has featured in solo and group shows from ANU to The Belconnen Art Centre, Tuggeranong Arts Centre and The Front Gallery. As a prolific and dynamic artist, he has had a varied career - from creating murals for Lonsdale Street Roaster, Max Brenner and Canberra Hospital, to designing artwork for festivals, albums and zines, painting personal portraits and in 2015 launching a special colouring-in book ‘Secret Cities’. With degrees in both fine art and animation, Paul’s art practice is inspired by the surrealist work of Brett Whitely and Roger Dean who is well known for designing iconic album covers of English bands. For the 2017 National Folk Festival, Paul Summerfield has created an artwork which encapsulates the spirit and ethos of the Festival. Taking inspiration from attending the National Folk Festival for many years, Paul says “I wanted to capture the energy of the festival, to show its appeal to everyone, not just people who like folk music”. The National Folk Festival will work with Paul Summerfield over a four year period during which he will design unique artwork for the Festival’s annual posters and merchandise. The 2017 National Folk Festival is on in Canberra across five jam-packed days on the Easter Weekend - 13-17 April 2017. Early bird tickets now available.
