Durham is an amazing county with a historic city at its heart, breathtaking dales, a dramatic coastline and a vale steeped in history.

Durham, about 25km south of Newcastle, is home to Durham University, one of the country’s leading universities (founded in 1832), which, as well as its strong academic record has an impressive cricketing reputation. Alumni include former England captains Nasser Hussain and Andrew Strauss.

The Riverside Durham cricket ground is located in the market town of Chester-le-Street, which is 18km by road south of Newcastle and 10km north of Durham City.

Durham City is home to one of the most recognisable landmarks in the UK, majestic Durham Cathedral. Together with adjacent Durham Castle, this UNESCO World Heritage Site forms one of the most stunning city panoramas in Europe and is a must-visit for anyone visiting the region.

Further south of Durham is where, in 1825, the world’s first railway opened from Darlington to Stockton.

Durham Cathedral is just one of a number of iconic sights in the region, including Anthony Gormley’s imposing Angel of the North sculpture that greets you on the southern approach to Newcastle, and the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle itself.

On Durham’s doorstep is the vibrant city of Newcastle, once a world leader in shipbuilding, it is a lively, dynamic city surrounded by vast swathes of rugged, beautiful countryside and coastline.

Roman ruins and medieval castles populate the region with much of Hadrian’s Wall, built in the first century to divide England from Scotland, still standing.

The 12th-century Durham Cathedral is

a must-see for anyone visiting the city.

WELCOME TO DURHAMThere is nowhere else in Britain quite like the North East of England.

The Tyne Bridge is one of a number of iconic structures in the north east.

Tyne Bridge, Newcastle

The Northumberland coastline, dotted with some of the aforementioned castles, provides some of the most glorious scenery in Britain.

The Geordie accent and dialect of Newcastle’s inhabitants are distinctive, and tricky for the uninitiated. The origins of the term Geordie are not entirely clear though it is believed to relate to the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 when Newcastle remained loyal to King George and were referred to as Georgies (which became Geordies) by the Scottish Jacobites.

Many Geordies would include in the above list of iconic sights, St James’ Park, the home of the city’s football team, Newcastle United, and one of the most passionately followed clubs in any sport. While rarely vying for titles and trophies, they have a proud history of showcasing flamboyant footballing talent, much of it locally produced. Among the many notable players to wear the famous black and white striped jersey of ‘The Toon’ are Paul ‘Gazza’ Gascoigne, Alan Shearer, Kevin Keegan and French star David Ginola.

Places of worship, such as churches, gurdwaras, mosques, synagogues and temples can be found in many areas of the city. For more information, please contact your hotel reception.

What do you like most about Durham and Newcastle?Newcastle is renowned for its nightlife and the much-improved Quayside area. It has a really good vibe to it – good restaurants and bars and the people are really friendly. It’s an entertaining place to visit. Durham has the cathedral and the castle and is a really pretty city. They’re both stunning places architecturally. To have Durham cathedral on our doorstep is ridiculous. When you go inside that place you just cannot believe that someone built it! It takes your breath away. The cobbled streets and Elvet Bridge are beautiful too.

What are your favourite places to eat and drink in the two cities? In Newcastle, you have Grey Street with its gin bars, including Dacantus (www.dacantus.com). There’s Stack (www.stacknewcastle.com), which is an outdoor bar with a fire and a tipi you can go in. That’s a really nice to play to go. Durham is more of a sightseeing place though there are some nice restaurants like Tango (www.tangodurham.co.uk).

What about places to visit away from the cities? This is what I enjoy – Northumberland is a stunning county. Out towards Corbridge in the Tyne Valley are some lovely little pubs like The Angel (www.theangelofcorbridge.com). The other thing people don’t realise about Northumberland is the beaches. Get up to these old fishing villages like Craster and Newton-by-the-Sea, where I’d recommend the Joiners Arms (www.joiners-arms.com). Places like Bamburgh and Berwick are stunning, with long, white sandy beaches.

What are your favourite memories of playing at The Riverside Durham? To play Test cricket at my home ground and score a century there [against the Windies in 2007] was a big highlight for me. And, lifting the County Championship trophy there in 2013.

Who’s your favourite Durham cricket personality?Beefy [Sir Ian Botham] – he’s the chairman! Throughout the years there have been many – Geoff Cook, Don Robson was the man who got the county going and I knew him right from when I was playing league cricket for Shotley Bridge. Steve Harmison, Graham Onions, Ben Stokes and now the likes of Keaton Jennings and Mark Stoneman – we have a great list of international players.

THE RIVERSIDE DURHAMWith the 14th-century Lumley Castle an impressive and imposing backdrop, the Riverside Durham is one of the most picturesque venues in England and Wales.

Australia beat Bangladesh by seven

wickets in the 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup.

The Riverside is a young venue, built as a prerequisite of Durham’s elevation from minor county to first-class status in 1992.

The ground is located in the market town of Chester-le-Street, which is 18km by road south of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and 10km north of the city of Durham.

Work on the ground began in 1990 and the first first-class match took place in May 1995 when Durham took on Warwickshire.

The Don Robson Pavilion (named in honour the club’s chairman who was so instrumental in bringing first-class cricket to Durham) was opened by the Queen in 1996.

The first international took place three years later when Pakistan beat Scotland by 94 runs in the ICC Cricket World Cup 1999. The ground hosted

one other match in that tournament in which Australia beat Bangladesh by seven wickets.

In 2003, the Riverside became England’s first new home Test venue since 1902 when it hosted Zimbabwe.

It is also the northernmost ground to host Test cricket – the North Pole is ‘only’ 2,429 miles away.

In 2007, Paul Collingwood became the first Durham player to make a Test century on his home ground when he scored 128 for England against the Windies.

England have won all six Tests played at the ground, including a memorable 74-run victory over Australia in 2013 that gave them an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Ashes series.

Stuart Broad took six for 20 in 45 balls in

the 2013 Ashes.

Chasing 299 to win, Australia were 120 for one as the weather-affected final day entered its last elongated session. Yet 155 minutes later, they were all out for 224. Six of the wickets fell to Stuart Broad, the master of the special spell, for 20 runs in 45 balls.

England also have a good record at the Riverside in ODIs but they have twice suffered heavy defeats by Sri Lanka.

In 2006, an unbroken third-wicket stand of 140 between Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara took Sri Lanka to an eight-wicket win with almost eight overs to spare. It was the third victory in a 5-0 series whitewash.

The Riverside is generally considered to favour pace bowlers, but the leading ODI wicket-taker on the ground is former England off-spinner Graeme Swann, who took five for 28 in 2009 as Australia were bowled out for 176.

Durham are the newest first-class county, having joined the elite of English cricket as recently as 1992, some 71 years after Glamorgan joined the County Championship.

DURHAM CRICKET

Remarkably, by 2008, they had their first Championship title, having also picked up a one-day trophy in 2007. Theirs was a popular underdog triumph and rich reward for the likes of their director of cricket Geoff Cook, the north-easterner who had plied trade down south with Northamptonshire but had returned to Durham in 1991. His quiet decency and masterful nurturing of local talent has long been admired in county cricket.

Steve Harmison, the fast bowler from Northumberland, was the leading wicket-taker while the top batsman was Australian left-hander Michael Di Venuto. The team was marshalled by the South African Dale Benkenstein.

Those three were at the forefront the following season too when Durham retained their title. Local bowlers and England internationals, Graham Onions and Liam Plunkett, also made substantial contributions.

Durham were champions again in 2013, fuelled even more than before by players who had graduated from the club’s academy. England all-rounder

Before that, Durham had been one of the game’s most successful minor counties. Between 1976 and 1982, they established a record of 65 matches without defeat. In 1973, they became the first minor county to defeat a first-class rival when they knocked the mighty Yorkshire out of the 60-over one-day cup.

For the first three years of their life as a first-class county Durham had a nomadic existence, playing at a variety of grounds including the Racecourse Ground in the city of Durham.

It took Durham a while to establish themselves on the field as a first-class county, but they did recruit some seasoned campaigners and star names including Ian Botham, aged 36, and Australian batsman Dean Jones. Botham, or Sir Ian as he is now, took over as Durham chairman in 2016.

The early years were tough and they were perennially finishing towards the bottom of the County Championship until 2005 when they turned last place in Division Two into a promotion the following season.

Durham recruited star names including

Ian Botham and Dean Jones.

Durham were champions again in 2013, fuelled by players from

the club’s academy.

Paul Collingwood led a side containing the likes of opener Mark Stoneman, all-rounders Scott Borthwick and Ben Stokes, and pace bowler Mark Wood.

With 70 wickets, Onions showed he was still going strong. Michael Richardson, son of ICC chief executive David Richardson, was also part of the side.

The county won a one-day trophy in 2014, but recent seasons have proved more challenging. In 2016, Durham finished a creditable fourth in the Championship table thanks to more than 1,000 runs each from Stoneman, Borthwick and Keaton Jennings. Onions, 34 by the end of the campaign, weighed in with 95 wickets.

But ten days later, the club learned they would be relegated from Division One of the Championship because of their parlous financial state that had necessitated a sizeable bail-out from the ECB.

Inevitably, a number of key players left the club – Stoneman and Borthwick to Surrey, Jennings and Onions to Lancashire – which has made the goal of promotion back to Division One even more challenging.

Collingwood, the only captain to lead England men to a global trophy, retired at the end of the 2018 season aged 42. He is Durham’s leading all-time run-scorer in first-class and one-day cricket.

The first stage (from 8 November 2018 to 14 February 2019) allowed for the written press, photographers and non-rights holding TV and radio broadcasters to apply online for the tournament media accreditation.

The second stage (from 1 to 28 February 2019) allows for the successful media to make requests to attend round-robin matches, as tournament accreditation alone does not provide access to venues on match days.

Requests for the semi-finals and final will be taken once the round-robin matches are complete. Priority will be given to media whose teams will feature in these matches.

To read more about the Media Terms and Conditions, and FAQs on media accreditation, please visit www.cricketworldcup.com/about

The service will also benefit journalists who are not attending the tournament as they will be able to produce their own copy with the assistance of the captains’ quotes.

Be sure to look out for the Taste Durham logo, a symbol of great quality food and service across the county.

Newcastle is a thriving, fashionable, modern city with a wide variety of bars, cafés and restaurants.

Grainger Market (www.graingermarket.org) is a 180-year-old covered market in the city centre with more than a hundred food stalls. Chinatown is essentially Stowell Street which runs north to south away from the St James’ Park stadium. The Bigg Market is a famous area of the city that gets lively at night. Fashionable dining amid striking architecture can be found in Quayside, as its name suggests on the banks of River Tyne.

This is just a small selection of the wide variety of eating and drinking options available in the city. These establishments are not endorsed either by the ICC or ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.
