Hygienic processing places high demands onthe reliability and cleanability of productionfacilities. Common challenges such ascorrosion in pipe systems, valve manifoldsand tank installations in differentpharmaceutical, chemical and biotechfacilities for example can be reduced, therebyreducing costs and improving plantavailability - by using multiport valves andmultiport-based manifolds. Multi-portsolutions such as the Robolux valve weredeveloped with exactly this type of high-purityinstallation in mind.
REDUCED INSTALLATION SPACE
The stand-out feature of the patentedRobolux valve design is that two independentprocess switching functions can be achievedwith one membrane. This reduces theinstallation space requirement, eliminates T-adapters and minimises the overall number ofvalves and membranes required. The multi-port membrane valves were designed forhigh-purity installations and make it possibleto design complex systems that areconsiderably more compact than those usingconventional fluid control valves. The design is also intended to minimise theinternal volume and produce no dead flowzones, which results in a number ofadvantages: In addition to improved flow andevacuation properties, both cleaning andchangeover of the interfaces for themanufacture of other products is easier andfaster, with less wastage of expensivechemicals and ingredients. This technology makes it possible to replacetwo traditional shut-off diaphragm valves andat the same time eliminate all dead legs andone tee-piece with one single valve. Whencombined with reduced installation andcommissioning costs, the Robolux valvedelivers a number of crucial advantages toprocess control within hygienic applications.
UNIQUE TESTING ABILITY
Bürkert is able to test cleaning cycles andprovide 100% reliability on the flow propertiesand cleanability of the complete valve byusing a riboflavin test rig. As part of a factoryacceptance test, Bürkert is currently the onlymanufacturer of fittings and valve interfacesin the world that owns and operates such atest rig. In hygienic applications where CIP /SIP are operated, it is essential to be able toensure the cleaning cycle is both effectiveand efficient; a criterion which can be
completely fulfilled and demonstrated byBürkert.
INTELLIGENT FIELD DEVICE
As part of the concept to decentralise valvecontrol systems, the Robolux valve can nowbe combined with Bürkert's ELEMENT controlhead to provide a complete process solutionwhich is compatible with the entire valveproduct range. The valves at field level can beequipped with all the required automationcomponents including pilot valves, electricalfeedback units and optical status indicators.By integrating an AS interface as a field businterface, the entire range of advantages ofthis approach can be fully utilised. All that isrequired for power supply, feedback andcommunication is a two-wire line connectingthe PLC with up to 62 valves.
DECENTRALISED CONTROL
The new decentralized automation conceptcan provide a viable and extremely compactalternative to the use of central switchingcabinets by integrating all the requiredautomation functions in the control headsthemselves. This provides considerablesavings in installation costs and also providescommissioning and maintenance engineerswith an instant indication of the status ofeach valve, which reduces the amount of timerequired for installation and trouble-shooting.
OPERATIONAL FEEDBACK
Using the control head as a central unit forthe control of the hygienic process valves, enables it to perform all pneumatic actuation, feedback and diagnostic functions, as well asbus communication. A three-colour opticalstatus display with high-power LEDs, which isintegrated in the control head, provides for avisual overview of the valve status at the fieldlevel. In addition to electrical feedback to themaster controller, it also signals the currentswitching position of the process valve, facilitating diagnosis and maintenance withinthe system itself.Due to the compatibility of the IP67ELEMENT control head with a wide range ofprocess control valves from Bürkert and manyother manufacturers, greater plantstandardisation can be achieved by equippingprocess system with components from theELEMENT platform.
NEW INTELLIGENTVALVE FROM BÜRKERTREDUCES PIPEWORKBY SWITCHINGMULTIPLE FLOWSThe ideal valve for use in a hygienic processing environment is easy to cleanusing CIP, contains a low internal volume and a minimum number of connectionsas well as offer super precise flow control abilities. These exact criteria were used to design the revolutionary Robolux valve fromBürkert, which, now compatible with its ELEMENT control heads offers a costsaving, space saving, intelligent field device which is ideally suited for use inpharmaceutical, chemical, food and beverage processing applications.
