It was later found I had suffered two “nasty bacterial infections” causing pneumonia and the abscess.

She went on to win successive gold in 1992 and 1993 but wasn’t back on the podium until 1997 when she completed the first women’s sweep with Carney and Gallagher. She would go on to win another four medals, her final podium finish a bronze in Queenstown behind Emma Snowsill in 2003. Who has been the biggest influence on your life: Definitely my family and friends - I couldn’t have reached where I am today without their support. Have you encountered any obstacles in your career: A few little hurdles that all athletes eventually face - injuries and illnesses; but nothing too serious.

How did you get involved? As an able bodied athlete I was dared by a friend to do a triathlon, as a para-athlete I just wanted to keep doing the sport I loved.
