WELCOME TO MEDIA DEMOCRACY DAYS 2013November 8-9, 2013

The last year has been significant for those who care about democracy.Governments have been exposed for collecting vast amounts of datathrough secretive surveillance programs. We have witnessed the tragicloss of young lives because of cyber-stalking, sexual shaming and theanonymity of the Internet. We have seen information that should bepublic being restricted, while paradoxically watching the exploitation ofpersonal information. These events have demonstrated the importance ofinvestigating who collects and controls information, and for what purposes.

By contrast, we have also seen the inspirational use of media to expand

the voices of aboriginal people in Canada. The #IdleNoMore movement,along with the protests against the Northern Gateway and Kinder Morganpipeline proposals, has increased the prominence of aboriginal voices inpolitical and environmental debates.

Thus, both of these themes ofinformation controland aboriginal voicesresonate through many of our events this year. For example, Saturdayskeynote speaker, Jennifer David, is a founding member of the AboriginalPeoples Television Network (APTN). There are also a number of panelsfocusing on aboriginal access to media and political power. Informationcontrol is the theme for Friday evenings keynote address and filmscreening. A number of panel discussions and workshops also echo thistheme.

Every year since 2001 MDD has created a public event that promotes afair and democratic communication system, one that gives voice to thesilenced, encourages diversity, and challenges the misuse of power. MDD

offers programs that encourage people to know the media, be the media,and change the media. We hope you find this years conference, and thedual themes we have chosen, challenging, informative and inspiring.

Kathleen Crosshas led the Media DemocracyProject for the last four years. She is an AssistantProfessor of Communication at Simon FraserUniversity and conducts research into mediademocracy, gender and politics. Her most recentresearch is looking at the role of alternative mediaand climate change.

This is especiallytrue for women, who are under-represented, promoted less, and oftenghettoized into lower status work. Producing Shame: Sexuality, Visibility and Cyberbullying

Gwen Barlee is the Policy Director and a spokespersonfor the 30,000 member Wilderness Committee. Sheis an active user of provincial freedom of informationlegislation and has learned through trial and error howto pry politically sensitive information from numerousgovernment bodies.

Myron Groover is a Vancouver-based librarian andarchivist keenly interested in how information policyshapes political discourse within contemporary andhistorical nation states. He serves as a Vice President ofthe British Columbia Library Association and chairs itsInformation Policy Committee.

Mike Larsen is an Instructor in the CriminologyDepartment at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Hisresearch deals with security, secrecy, and access toinformation. He is author ofAccess in the Academy:Bringing FOI and ATI to Academic Research(FIPA 2013) andCo-Editor of Brokering Access: Power, Politics, and Freedomof Information Process in Canada(UBC Press 2012).

MODERATOR

Micheal Vonnis a lawyer and the Policy Director of theBC Civil Liberties Association. She has been an AdjunctProfessor in the Faculty of Law at the University of BritishColumbia and an Adjunct Professor at the UBC Schoolof Library, Archival and Information Studies, where she

teaches information ethics and intellectual freedom. Ms.Vonn is a frequent speaker on a variety of civil libertiestopics including free speech and democratic rights.

Rob McMahon is a postdoctoral researcher with theFirst Nations Innovation project at the University of NewBrunswick. He is also coordinating the First Mile Project.His research focuses on how indigenous peoples areshaping and using information and communicationstechnologies.

For the past 5 years Melina worked atGreenpeace as a tar sands Climate & Energy Campaigner andis now finishing her Masters degree in Indigenous governancefocusing on sustainable communities.

Arthur Manuelis a spokesperson for the Indigenous Networkon Economies and Trade and Defenders of the Land, and is alsoa former chairperson of the Interior Alliance of BC First Nations.Manuel has been a leading voice of opposition to the Canadiangovernments agenda to extinguish Aboriginal and Treatyrights, and assimilate Indigenous peoples into the Canadianbody politic.

Jarrah Hodge is the founder of Gender-Focus.com, whichwas named Best Feminist Blog in the 2012 CanadianWeblog Awards. She has written on feminist issues for BitchMagazine, the Vancouver Observer, and the Huffington Post.She has a particular interest in politics, having run in the2005 provincial election for the NDP, and was part of theGlobal BC1 youth pundit panel for this election.

Merlyn Horton started her professional career as ayouthworker and street outreach program pioneer. For nearly20 years she worked with high risk youth in many differentresidential and community settings. For the last twelve yearsshe has served as the founder and Executive Director of theSafe Online Outreach Society (SOLOS).

Stuart Poyntzis an Assistant Professor in the School of

Communication at Simon Fraser University. His researchinterests include childrens media culture, the history of medialiteracy, and the work of Hannah Arendt. He is the co-authorofMedia Literacies: A Critical Introductionand works withMedia Democracy Days as our programming advisor.

Jen Sungis a lifelong queer-rights advocate and publicspeaker. She is the Program Coordinator and facilitator at

Out in Schools, an anti-homophobia education initiative byOut On Screen, which also produces the annual VancouverQueer Film Festival. Jen has been featured on the cover ofthe Georgia Straight and performed on PechaKucha Night atthe Vogue Theatre.

Daniel Maki is a recent UBC graduate in political scienceand history. Daniel is an activist, writer, feminist and ardentculture vulture. Currently working in digital media and queerhealth, for him the personal is the political when it comes toMDD.
