PublicationsThe bi-monthly International Journal on Hydropower& Dams, entering its 25th year in 2018, is read in morethan 180 countries by hydropower specialists, damowners and operators, planners, developers, researchers, consultants, financiers, contractors, suppliers, teachersand students. It is a Journal which is taken seriouslyand retained as a source of reference; back issues arefrequently requested.

Topics covered include: research and development forhydro machinery; dam, powerplant and spillway safety;dam design and construction; flood discharge works;marine energy; pumped storage; uprating and refurbishment; climate resilience; and, environmentaland social aspects. Articles are aimed at enhancingthe safety, efficiency and economy of future hydropowerand water resources development projects, as well asimproving operation and maintenance at existingdams and powerplants.

Each issue has a regional focus (Africa, Asia, LatinAmerica, North America or Europe), as well as a varietyof technical themes. Reports are published on theoutcomes of events organized by ICOLD, ICID, theWorld Water Council, UNFCCC and others.

The annual publication, the H&D World Atlas & Industry Guide, represents a unique source of reference, with data thoroughly researched each yearin collaboration with national and regional authorities,to provide a comprehensive world survey of waterresources development in about 170 countries.

Maps and technical posters complete the portfolio ofpublications. The annual World Map, and variousregional maps (produced to coincide with majorindustry events), present world statistics and projectlocations in a visually attractive format. The Aqua~Media website provides regular informationon the company’s activities, as well as a Calendarof Events for the industry. Journal subscribers canbenefit from extra on-line business news and tenderinformation uploaded between issues of the printedpublication.

EventsAs an extension of Aqua~Media’s publishing activity, the company plays an active role in the professionthrough the organization of major international and regional events. These bring together delegationsfrom all parts of the world, to address topical issues insessions, panel discussions and workshops.

AMI Hydropower FoundationAqua~Media International founded the AMIHydropower Foundation, a charitable body, governedby an international Board of Trustees, in 2007.

A percentage of revenue from the annual HYDRO Conferences istransferred to the Foundation each year, and additional donations aremade by companies and individuals in the hydropower profession. The funds are used to assist eligible delegates from less developedcountries to attend the H&D Conferences, with applications forfunding being reviewed by the Trustees. In this way, Aqua~Mediahelps to ensure that the expertise emerging from the presentationsand discussions reaches the parts of the world where it is most urgentlyneeded. So far, more than 160 delegates from less developed countrieshave been assisted to attend conferences.

CIRCULATION AND READERSHIP PROFILE

The International Journal on Hydropower & Damsis read in 185 countries and more than 3000 copies

of each edition are distributed worldwide. Additionalcopies are distributed to delegates at the majorinternational and regional conferences organized byAqua~Media as well as at other key industry events atwhich Aqua~Media participates.

Aqua-Media International is a member of the AuditBureau of Circulation (ABC). Between August 2013and December 2016, an average of 3027 copies ofeach issue of the Journal were sent out to subscribersand to our controlled circulation. The latter includescopies requested by readers (at utilities, ministries andconsulting companies) in the less developed countries. The next ABC audit will cover the six issues in 2017.

The ABC ‘headline’ figure excludes extrabulk distribution at around 10 majorindustry events each year. For example, copies were distributed in

2017at: the 7th World Water Forum, Daegu (600copies); The African Development Bank AnnualMeeting, Lusaka (300 copies); Hydropower: TheCaspian and Central Asia, Tbilisi (150 copies);AFRICA 2017 (Marrakech (800 copies); ICOLD 2017,Prague (1000 copies); ADSDO Conference, San Anto-nio (300 copies); Power of Water, Niagara (300copies); and, British Hydropower Association’s Annual Conference (100 copies).

We ensure that the journal reaches the main water andpower utilities or government departments (ministriesof water and energy) in all countries with active waterresources development programmes.

The AMI Hydropower Foundation co-sponsorscirculation costs to those requesting issues in the leastdeveloped countries of Asia and Africa.

Readership surveys have demonstrated that each copyof the journal is read by 8 to 10 people on average, because many organizations circulate the journalinternally. Surveys indicate that Hydropower & Damsis regarded as the most widely read (and retained)technical and business journal in this market, as aresult of the mix of high-level technical content, andbusiness and policy coverage.

Organizations retain their copies as a source of reference, and if they find a copy is missing, they often purchaseback-issues to complete the set.

A minimum of 4000 copies of each journal is printed (4500when a large bulk distribution is required for an event). We retain about 100 copies for future sales. A signifi-cant investment has been made in recent years inincreasing the circulation in less-developed countries, where there is a strong need for technical and businessinformation, in view of the major schemes movingahead and being planned. This involves a regularreview of the controlled circulation list, to ensure weare reaching the most appropriate people.

Aqua~Media also organizes biennial regionalevents in Asia and Africa covering hydropower

and multipurpose water storage schemes.International experts meet to focus on issues of specific relevance to the region. ASIA 2018 will be heldin Danang, Vietnam (13-15 March).

The regional events (in Asia and Africa) attract about700 participants from more than 45 countries. Theseevents provide an ideal forum for networking with keydecision makers in the parts of the world where manyof the most significant hydro and dam projects of the next decades will be constructed. .

The first African event, co-hosted with ICOLDand EEP, was held in Ethiopia in 2013, incollaboration with the African Union and UNECA. In2017, the second conference in the AFRICA series washeld in Marrakech, Morocco.

The major IFIs and regional development banksregularly participate, including the World Bank, IFC,Asian and African Development Banks, the EuropeanInvestment Bank, EBRD, KfW and others.

There is no other event in the world, specifically focusing on hydropower, which attracts such international participation.

The major event of the year for those involved in allaspects of hydropower and dams is the annual

HYDRO conference hosted by Aqua~Media in Europe, organized in collaboration with the national utility ofthe host country. HYDRO 2018 will take place inGdansk, Poland (15-17 October).

With the expertise of an International Steering Committee, and officers of professional associationssuch as ICOLD and IEA, a programme is put togetherfor three days of presentations, panel discussions andworkshops.

Four tracks of sessions cover technical, environmental/social and financial and contractual issues. Emphasis isplaced on accelerating water resources schemes in the

less developed countries, and on emerging issuessuch as climate resilience, security of powerplants anddams, management of ageing water infrastructure andsuccession planning in the industry. A TechnicalExhibition runs alongside the Conference, where allcompanies active in the hydro industry have the opportunity to showcase their products and services, bringing their expertise to the attention of key decision-makers in more than 80 countries.

More than 30 per cent of participants at the annualevents taking place in Europe represent ministries, utilities or private developers of hydro plants.About 20 per cent are consultants, another 25 percent are suppliers, and others are civil contractors, financiers, academics and students.

• How is the power sector structured in Georgia?• Which priority hydro projects are moving ahead in Madagascar?• Where is pumped-storage playing the most significant role?• How much potential for hydro refurbishment is there in Western Europe?• Which South American country has 25 small hydro plants planned?• Is there a company making hydraulic gates in Nepal?• What proportion of Colombia’s electricity is produced by hydropower?

The answers to these questions, and several thousand more, can all be found in oneplace: the Hydropower & Dams World Atlas and Industry Guide.Whether you are ateacher or student learning about hydropower, a manufacturer exploring new markets,or a consultant preparing a talk on trends in global water and energy development, the Atlas contains the information you need. The country reports, statistics on dams, hydro potential and new capacity under construction are based on months of detailed research, conducted incollaboration with national authorities. No publication, association, or industry website produces comparable,up-to-date, information from 178 countries, or such comprehensive global statistics on hydro capacity inoperation, under construction and planned.

Why spend hours on Google? The H&D Atlas has all the answers...

Our technical posters and maps are a source of reference used in the offices of numerous utilities, government departments and other organizations, as well as at many project sites, all over the world.
