What is Media cultureIn cultural studies media culture refers to

the current western capitalist society that emerged and developed from the 20th century under the influence of mass media.

Media culture helps reinforce the hegemony and power of specific political, cultural and economical groups.

Media culture reproduces existing social values, oppressions and inequalities.

When for instance, TV serials or films return us to the glorified ‘perfect’ family, they gloss over the gender inequalities that exist within the patriarchal family structure.

When films depict the corruption of the political system and the common man’s quest for justice at the hands of an equality corrupt police, they articulate issues we see every day in our own lives and read about in newspapers.
