4 X 4 (plus goalkeepers)for Primary School Children

Set-upFour or five small pitches (approximately 20 X 40metres each) on a full-sized field (40 to 50+ players participating)


WHY?1. 4 X 4 is the smallest/easiest form of football without

losing the key ingredients:• The ball (size 3 or 4)• The opponents• The team-mates• The goals (appropriate to the size of the children)• The space (suitable for children)• The rules (simpler with no offside or throw-ins)• Direction (back-to-front)• Time (short periods of play eg. 10' each way)



WHY?2. All the skills can be developed:

• control/ passing/ shooting/ saving/ tackling/ dribbling/ etc.

• simple reading of the game (vision)• constant repetition of basic football situations

(decision making)• intense communication with others



WHY?3. All the principles of football are there:

• Depth (play forward or back)• Width (play to the wings)• Mobility (play at angles and interchange

positions)



WHY?4. The elements of fair play and enjoyment are

encouraged:• Many touches of the ball• A 'game teacher' on the side of each
