MEDIA ADVISORY/PHOTO OPPORTUNITY September 20, 2012 Icons in Transformation Exhibition at The Basilica of Saint Mary Media Invited to a Preview Reception with Artist Ludmila Pawlowska WHAT: On September 20, members of the media are invited to The Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis for a preview reception of the recently installed exhibition Icons in Transformation. This traveling exhibition includes the contemporary work of abstract expressionist Ludmila Pawlowska along with Russian traditional Icons from the Vassilevsky Monastery/Suzdal. Remarks will be made by Debra Korluka and Director of Liturgy Johan van Parys, Ph.D. The artist will give a guided tour of the exhibition. BACKGROUND: Russian born Pawlowska, who now works in Sweden, has been deeply influenced by the color and symbolism of the art in her home country. Her three-dimensional works combine painting and sculpture –using a mixed technique (oil, acrylic, fabric, metal, stone, collage, copper, limestone, granite) on wood panels. The exhibition is not about Icons but shows the Icon as an inspiration for Pawlowska s artistic vision. It shows both traditional Russian Icons and contemporary art inspired by traditional icon-painting techniques. Pawlowska uses similar techniques with many layers of paint on wooden panels. She writes, “what fascinates me most in the art of Icons is the deep sensitivity they radiate. The Icon has a spiritual power which comes from the Icon itself, a kind of light. To create and capture a light has always been the most difficult and greatest challenge to artists through the centuries. This exhibition is my attempt to capture it in my own way.” KEY FACTS: This exhibition runs from September 22—November 15 in The Basilica Church, Pope John XXIII Gallery and Teresa of Calcutta Hall Tours may be scheduled throughout the exhibition by contacting Kathy Dhaemers at 612.317.3438 or [email protected] PHOTO/INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITIES: Visit with artist Ludmila Pawlowska about her works Interview Director of Liturgy Johan van Parys to learn more about Sacred Arts at The Basilica and this exhibition Photograph art in the exhibit WHEN/WHERE: Thursday, September 20, 2012 6:00 – 8:00pm Lower level of The Basilica undercroft The Basilica of Saint Mary Corner of Hennepin and North 17 th St . www.mary.org CONTACT: Jenna Bennett Johan van Parys Director of Marketing & Communications Director of Liturgy & Sacred Arts Cell: 612-816-3126 Cell: 612-232-1951 [email protected] [email protected]
