The life Of Dexter

• Dexter was the Japanese Medaka fish that our lab group was given to observe and study.

• We received Dexter on April 8, 2011 and watched him hatch on April 19, 2011.

The first day Stage 18

Page 3: Medaka fish project 22

In the beginning

• The first thing we did was name our fish Dexter.

• We then placed the fish egg onto the microscope and looked at the forming fish inside.

• We recorded the stage that the egg was in and then took a picture.

Day 4 Stage 30

A few days later

• Dexter grew extremely fast it was amazing. One day you could barely tell it was a fish and in like 2 days you could see everything coming together.

• The hardest part of this whole project was finding what stage the fish was in.

• The first day we got our fish it was in Stage 18

Different stages

• Day one Dexter was at stage 18

• Day two Dexter was at stage 23

• Day three Dexter was at stage 28

• Day Four Dexter was at stage 30

• Day Five Dexter was at stage 32-33

• Day Six Dexter was at stage 35

• The last day Dexter was at stage HATCHED!

Finally hatched

• The whole time we were looking at the Medaka fish I really wanted to see it hatched. But after it hatched I realized I was expecting more than what I saw.

• Even though I knew that the fish was very small I imagined that the fish would be pretty big after it hatched. It really wasn’t any bigger than the egg.

• Actually it was hard to see the fish in the water swimming around.

As first time parents

• I was really excited to watch a baby fish while it was growing inside of it’s egg. It was really exciting.

• Also I was proud because the fish survived long enough to hatch and didn’t die previous to hatching.

• I honestly thought that I was going to kill it when I put it on the slide or took it off. I was afraid to squish it or something along the line of that.

Scares!!!!

• One day when I was putting Dexter onto the slide he got stuck in the dropper.

• My heart sunk I thought, “This is it, I just killed our poor little fish.”

• But with the help of Shaylyn we got the fish out of the dropper and on to the slide.

What are these people doing to me?

• Honestly I felt bad for our fish. We had to flip him around and shove him in a dropper every day.

• If I were Dexter I would be thinking, “What the heck is this? An earth quake?”

• I think I would also be slightly dizzy.

How to take care of a medaka fish

• Medaka fish require water to live in

• How to feed your fish

• They will eat regular fish food and if you feel like getting fancy you can culture little shrimp but that is a little pricy.

• Keep the water clean and fresh!
