SPOTLIGHTBUSINESS

Caffrey’s career started at IIMAK, a printing and imaging company in Amherst, while she was completing her undergraduate degree. “A big reason I got the job was because they were impressed that I was in school,” explains Caffrey, who was presented with an opportunity to work in Geel, Belgium while completing her graduate coursework.

At that time, she was finishing her MBA coursework and working on her capstone project. “My instructor, Dr. Michael Lillis, professor and chair of the Business Department, and study group were very supportive of this opportunity,” she shares. “My study group and I were able to communicate over the phone to work to complete our final project.”

While in Belgium, Caffrey focused on analytical marketing. “I took some of the new products we had in the States, and looked to see if they would be a good fit in the European market. To do that, I analyzed competitive products, price-points, and market needs,” she explains.

When she returned, IIMAK didn’t have an opening in their marketing department and Caffrey wasready to leave sales. She used career resources that were available to her through Doug Anderson, associate professor in the Humanities Department, and Medaille to secure a position as director of marketing with Sherex Fastening Solutions.

“They were impressed that I had my master’s and they loved that I had overseas exCaffrey. She advises graduates looking for a career in the marketing/business field toyourself; take overseas experience if you can; if you graduated with honors, broadcast it; byou have a Medaille education; and, use your networks through the college.”

Now, Caffrey is a career development counselor with Hunt Real Estate. After havinFrankie, Caffrey decided she wanted to stay home, and she took advantage of an othat presented itself with Hunt Real Estate. “I manage a dashboard. Basically, peopleand it’s almost like they take a personality test. I get the results and based on those Iand talk with them about being a real estate agent and work to help them get starbusiness,” she explains.

For Caffrey, the transition from Sherex to Hunt Real Estate was seamless. “Instead of marnuts from Sherex, I now market Hunt Real Estate and how to start a career in real estate,” say

What is your favorite marketing campaign? “GEICO. I don’t like all their ads, but I like how they have so many different ads and how they are targeting different people with them.”

All-American Kendall McFayden ’10 CJ Turns Professional After graduating in May, Kendall McFayden

’10 CJ moved to Texas and signed a professional

contract with the Austin Aztex of the United

Soccer League. The opportunity came in part

from McFayden’s play last summer with the

Premier Development League, where he impressed

the coaches enough to earn a pro deal.

“All my life I’ve said that I’m going to play professional

soccer, and people would say there was no way that would

happen. You’re too small. You’re going to a Division III

college. No one’s going to get to see you at all. But

through the work of my coach [Dan Krzyzanowicz

’04, head coach of the men’s soccer team and

assistant director of athletics at Medaille] and my

performance, I’ve allowed myself to get to the next

level,” explains McFayden. “Krzyzanowicz really

pushed me to the best of my ability and believed in

me that I could play at the next level.”

McFayden established himself during his four years

on Medaille’s soccer team and his success is easy

to see. He ranks in four career categories for the

Mavericks, including fourth in career points (105)

and assists (25), and third in career goals (40) and

shots (201).

McFayden’s signing with a professional team is an

outstanding accomplishment; not many Division III

players get the opportunity. “What I’ve seen so far is

that McFayden is the only Division III player in the

country to have signed at the USL or MLS level ...

It’s a tremendous feat, even for a Division I player,”

stated Krzyzanowicz in a press release posted on

D3soccer.com.

The biggest adjustment thus far in McFayden’s eyes

is “going from being a starter on a winning team to

being a bench player on a winning team.” But he

adds, “I love getting better every day. The coaches and

players really push [each other] to make sure we [all]

get better every day. I love my life right now. I play

soccer and that’s all I have to worry about.”

team and assistant director of athletics at Medaille

Looking back at the 2009-10 athletic season, the overall performance of the athletic program can only be described as exceptional. For the fourth straight year, the teams nished with a winning record, increasing their winning percentage over 10% to 64.6% (190-103-5). For the rst time ever, all ten AMCC teams made their conference playoffs, and 12 of 14 eligible teams participated in post-season play.

Individual achievements were no less impressive. 30 Mavericks received All-Conference honors, ve players earned ECAC All Star Awards, and Kendell McFayden ’10 (men’s soccer; see p. 6 in this issue) and Ryan Murdie ’10 (men’s volleyball) each earned All-America Honors. Of the ve coaches who received Coach of the Year Honors, three were alumni: Dan Krzyzanowicz ’04, Jake Beiter ’07, and Keith Koch ’00 ’05.
