June is Cataract Awareness Month What is a Cataract? A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens, which blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye. The lens of the eye is located behind the pupil and the colored iris, and is normally trans-parent. The lens helps to focus images onto the retina—which transmits the images to the brain. Your vision may become blurry or dim because the cataract stops light from properly passing through your retina. How common are Cataracts? Cataracts are a leading cause of blindness among older adults in the United States. More than half of all Americans have cataracts by the time they are 80 years old. Cataracts can sometimes be found in young people or even newborn babies. Am I at risk for developing Cataracts? The exact cause of a cataract is unknown. Most often, a cataract is part of getting older. As you age, you are at greater risk of developing a cataract. There are also several possible risk factors, such as: ♦ Intense heat or long-term exposure to UV

rays from the sun ♦ Certain diseases, such a diabetes ♦ Inflammation in the eye or eye injuries ♦ Hereditary influences ♦ Long-term steroid use ♦ Eye diseases ♦ Smoking

What are the symptoms of a Cataract? Generally, a cataract does not cause pain, redness or tears. You may have blurred vision, double vision, ghost images or the sense of a “film” over your eyes. Lights may seem too dim for reading or close-up or you are “dazzled” by strong light. You might be changing eyeglass prescriptions often and the change does not

seem to help your vision. You may also be able to see the cataract in your eye. It may look like a milky or yellowish spot on your pupil. Cataracts usually form in both eyes, but not at the same rate. They can develop slowly or quickly or progress to a certain point then not get any worse. As a result, you may not notice

large changes in your sight right away. If you notice any changes in your vision make an appointment to see your eye doctor. Annual eye exams can help your doctor monitor any changes to your eyes. After an eye exam your doctor will determine whether you have cataracts, how much they interfere with your vision, whether surgery would help, and what types of treatment is best for you. Cataract surgery has restored vision to millions of people. Every year in the U.S., more that two million cataract surgeries are performed. For more info go to www.preventblindness.org

We call and we email, we ask for your time and you

give of it so generously, never expecting a dime.

Be it rain or shine or last minute, you shine through

every time.

You provide rides and shopping, which are no small

feats, because no matter what, we all have to eat

You bring joy to many people who are singing the

blues. You provide a listening ear and a shoulder to

cry on. You become a familiar face, one seniors can

rely on.

We express our thanks as often as we can. Please

know that the Senior Center Staff are your biggest

fans.

I want to thank everyone who attended this year’s Recognition Dinner. I hope you had as good a time as I did! We are “Over the Moon” for all of you. MCCOA Staff does appreciate all that you do for the Senior Center. It is said to “NEVER underestimate the POWER of a volunteer”--great quote, right? For me these words ring SO TRUE! I try my BEST to never doubt the capabilities of our volunteers who are so willing and ready to do just about anything we ask of them. Here are a few of our Volunteers hard at

work.

more!

LOSING FACE

Finding one of her students making faces at others on the play ground,

Mrs. Smith stopped to gently reprove the child. Smiling sweetly, the Sunday School teacher said, “Bobby, When I was a child, I was told that if I made ugly faces, it would freeze and I would stay like that.” Bobby looked up and replied, “Well Mrs. Smith, you can’t say you

weren’t warned.”
