SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF AUREL STODOLA

Aurel Stodola was a Slovak engineer and inventor. He made the study of thermodynamics. He was a professor at the Institute of Technology in Zurich for almost half of his lifetime. He was consulted for input on developing the gas turbine. During the cold war, he teamed up with a surgeon to help injured soldiers returning from war. He made the first heat pump in 1928 and is still being used as a primary source of heat generation for Geneva. He published a manual that was highly regarded and translated into several languages. He was given honorary doctorates by four universities. The Institute of Technology in Zurich declared 2009 the “Year of Aurel Stodola.” Also asteroid ‘3981 Stodola’ was named in his honor.
