What is Mechanical Engineering?

Page 4: Mechanical & electrical engineering

Mechanical engineers create and build mechanical devices.

Mechanical engineer is concerned with heat utilization or machine design.

Heat utilization techniques are applied in boilers, air conditioners, and refrigeration units.

Machine design is more focused on hardware, including automobile engines, computers, and washing machines.

What is Electrical Engineering?

Page 6: Mechanical & electrical engineering

Electrical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the technology of electricity.

Electrical engineers work on components, devices and systems such as microchips and power station generators.

Examples: Security system, lighting point, electrical substation.

Process for a Project

Page 8: Mechanical & electrical engineering

Client comes out with conceptual brief.

Architect design the needs of client using schematic design.

Meeting consist of: Client’s representative (project manager), Architect, Civil and Structure engineer, Mechanical and Electrical engineer, Quantity Surveyor, (Landscape Architect, Interior Designer, Acoustic consultant (Soundproof), Environmental consultant)

Page 9: Mechanical & electrical engineering

Objective: To go through the design development so that the client is able to provide inputs on the design and other parties are constantly updated with client’s changes of a certain issue.

Consultant needs to coordinate with each other to further develop the design.

Civil and Structure engineer design road and drainage, retaining wall, sewerage.

The frame of building and coordinate with the Mechanical and Electrical engineer.

Building plan ready and submitted to local authority for approval.

Quantity Surveyor prepare the bill of quantity so that they can incorporate the requirements in the tender documentation.

Mechanical and Electrical engineer prepares the schedule of prices for tenderer.

Tenderer issues the tender documents and drawings. They will analyse the given documents before construction process starts.

Constructions can be started after appointing a contractor.

Site meetings carried out to discuss details of the process such as Clarification and suitable ways for installation.

Testing and Commissioning: check, inspect and test project component.

C.C.C (Certificate of Completion Compliance) is issued by Architect to ensure buyers safety.

Job scope for Mechanical Engineers: Location of air conditioner.

Location of compressor.

Properties of water tank.

Location of water tanks and piping to each water tap and shower point.

Design Fire-fighting system.

Mechanical and Electrical engineer work together to ensure the system is functional.
