What is mechanical advantage?
• The number of times a machine multiplies the effort force.
Lever MA Formula
Lever (any class)
MA lever = distance from fulcrum to effort distance from fulcrum to
resistance
= Le Lr
Wheel and axle MA Formula
MA w&a = radius of wheel = rw radius of axle ra
Pulleys MA Formula
• Fixed pulley: Always 1 (does not change the force, only direction)
• Moveable Pulley/Block and Tackle = the number of sections of rope that support the object
**If the string goes up, count it**If the string goes down, don’t count
it
Inclined Plane MA Formula
MA inclined plane = length of incline = L
height of incline h
