WHY WE NEED INSTRUMENTS?

The human senses cannot provide exact quantitative information about the events occurring in our environment.

Scientific Instruments allow the human to observe and measure aspects of physical universe beyond the range and precision of the unaided human senses.

Page 11: measurement, instruments

Instruments are the essential extensions

of human sensing and perception without which

scientific exploration of nature would be impossible.

WHERE ARE THESE TOOLS USED?

Page 13: measurement, instruments

Basic to all engineering is

designand basic to all design is the

making of measurements.

“If an engineer were to deprived of his

measuring devices, he would be

reduced to guessing and speculation.”

MEASUREMENT

Measurement is a means for describing the various physical and chemical parameters of materials in quantitative terms.

Page 17: measurement, instruments

The result of measurement is expressed as

Unknown Quantity -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adopted Standard

Ex. 10cm length implies that the object is 10 times as large as 1 cm (standard)

Page 18: measurement, instruments

For consistence and quantitative comparison of physical parameters,

certain standards of mass, length, time, temperature and

electrical quantities have been established.
