ANALYSIS OF VSM

• Working fluids are typically a valuable resource that is wasted in the geothermal power generation process.

• The working fluid needs to be purchased in order to accommodate those losses.

• If the geothermal power generation process takes place in arid regions, then the losses in water can become very costly.

A3 FORM

• Issue: Working fluids are typically a valuable resource that is wasted in the geothermal power generation process.

• Background and Cost: 5-10% of the working fluid (water) is lost in the underground reservoir. Typically, the working fluid needs to be purchased in order to accommodate those losses.

• Current State: If the geothermal power generation process takes place in arid regions, then the losses in water can become very costly.

A3 FORM CONTINUED

Goals and Targets: ·    To reduce the cost associated with the purchasing more working fluid.·    To locate a cheaper working fluid that can satisfy the needs of the process.

COST & BENEFITS (ROI)

Implementation Cost: Cost of building a IGCC (Integrated gasification

combined cycle) power plant Cost of building a Geothermal power plant

Implementation Benefit: Government pays you for having zero carbon emissions

($50 million grant) Reduced cost of fluid transportation Fluid loss in reservoir is no longer an expense More sustainable Environmentally friendly

LESSONS LEARNED Waste as ResourceCarbon dioxide is considered to be a

detrimental substance to the environment, and in most cases, it is wasted. By using it, we make efficient use of waste and decrease the environmental damage.

PartnershipOne of our ideas is to make partnerships with

coal companies to make use of their waste. What can be learned from this idea is that partnership can be a very efficient way to solve problems.
