This morning I noticed the frosty white ground for the first time this season. It reminded me that winter is not far away. How lucky we are to experience the holiday months in Virginia, where days are warm and we can continue to enjoy the course throughout the winter season. GOBBLER CLASSIC Friday, November 29th 9 A.M. Shotgun Start Format: Pinehurst System

The Gobbler Classic is an 18-hole event designed for players wanting to play a round of golf while enjoying the companionship of a selected partner and another two-some (decided by “Blind Draw”). The “Pinehurst” format allows players to tee off on each hole. Players then proceed to your partner’s ball to hit a 2nd shot while your partner goes to your tee shot to strike a 2nd shot. The team then makes a strategic decision which ball they will use for their 3rd shot. At this point players use alternate strokes through the hole’s completion. Prizes are distributed to the teams with the lowest scores and to other teams that place which is decided by “Blind Draw”. This means your team can win whether your team finishes first, 27th or last!

October was the second highest attendance of the year. Chateauneuf du Pape earned wine of the month. More exciting news was the announcement of several of the upcoming events.

The November 6th Riedel Wine Tasting event is SOLD OUT! Mr. Doug Cohn of the Riedel Glassware Company will present on the tasting effects of varietal stemware. We hope to demonstrate the accentuation of the grape in a glass that was designed by George Riedel for each type or style of wine. All event participants will walk away with a tasters set of the stemware.

Because all of the stemware had to be ordered in advance, the wine club was forced to pre-sell all available seats. For all of us who have worked hard to bring this event to Meadowbrook we are extremely excited that we sold out the original forty seats and opened the doors for yet another eight bringing to confirmed total to 48. We anticipate high wine sales for the evening as a result of understanding just how big a difference the premium stemware can add to the enjoyment of the grape.

Paul Mergler

Beloved Chesdin Employee

Paul Mergler, a beloved (Lake Chesdin) Meadowbrook-Chesdin golf employee passed on Sunday, September 29, 2013. Paul was an avid golfer who played on courses around the state, including many rounds of golf at Meadowbrook-Chesdin with members and friends. Paul started working at Meadowbrook-Chesdin June 13, 2002 as a golf employee. He brought up golf carts for members, and served as a golf Marshall for golf tournaments. Most members had interaction with Paul on Saturdays and Sundays, when he would take a golf cart over to a member’s vehicle to secure their clubs in a golf cart. Prior to employment with us Paul was employed as Director of the Tidewater Heart Association for five years. He then moved to the area to work with The Virginia State Health Department where he retired after 36 years as Administrative Director of Medical and Hospital Services. Paul will be missed by members, staff and management.

November Newsletter from the Golf Course

The fall season is always a wonderful time on the golf course. The weather is mild and the course is in good shape for some great golf days. The staff at the Lake Chesdin course has been busy maintaining the course and trying to keep up with the leaves. The number of leaves is very large, but it is not infinite. At least that’s what I tell my crew to keep them from getting discouraged! If your lawn needs to recover from summer stress, there is still time to aerify, seed, fertilize, and put down lime before the season ends. I haven’t seen any lawns in Virginia that didn’t need lime, and any time is a good time for an application. Lime helps loosen the soil, makes fertilizer more available, and provides calcium to the grass (and it is pretty cheap!). We have several projects planned for this winter, including leveling some of the tees and fairways where old irrigation lines have settled. If you have any “pet peeves” about the golf course, let me know and we will try to address them in the winter months. We are fortunate in Virginia that we can often play golf year-round, so don’t put the clubs away just yet. Come on out and enjoy some of the prettiest days of the year!

Chesdin Clubhouse

GARY SOYERS was the winner of the 2013 Jim Malone RAMS Championship, announced at the October 23 RAMS Awards Dinner! In addition to having his name added to the RAMS championship, Gary was presented a blue sport coat which actually belonged to Jim with a RAMS insignia on the breast pocket as a symbol of his championship. Gary will present the blue coat to next year’s champion. Many thanks, to Bee Malone, for donating the jacket and for her sponsorship of the closest to the pin competition in the tournament.

Hats off to the RAMS.

The following WONDERFUL RAMS came out on the sunny, clear morning of October 21 to rake pine tags for the Tea Trail in the Gillette Garden: Ben Thorp (the organizer), Carrol Cox, Richard Willig, Herman Kiger, Gary Larsen, Cal Thompson, Nancy Kiger, Allison MacMillan, and Joe Dilday with his wonderful machine! Several truckloads were gathered and during the winter will be spread over the walking path when the next phase of the Tea Trail restoration is completed.

CELEBRATING OUR

2013 CITY CHAMPIONS

SAVE THE DATE!

Keep the evening of Friday, November 22 open on your calendar. From 7 until 9 pm, the RAMS will be hosting a celebration for our two city champions, Lyberty Anderson and Adam Ball, at the club. For this event, there is a cash bar only. Guests are invited and may use their own credit card or charge back their club for expenses. A number of special guests have been invited, and the RAMS committee is working to obtain the services of a very special guest MC. Tickets to this event will be sold, so look for posters throughout the club to see where to purchase them. Since this is a RAMS sponsored event, we want to see a 100% turnout from our organization. This is an excellent opportunity to show off our club to our guests and to members of the media who have been invited to attend. SEE YOU THERE!

RAMS Spring Trip The Fall Pinehurst Trip has just concluded, and we’re already gearing up for Spring. The Spring trip will run from May 4 (arrival) to May 7 (departure) and not in April as previously announced. We will play Legacy on May 5 with a 9:00 am shotgun start and the Pines Course at Whispering Pines on May 6 with an 8:30 am shotgun start. Prices are as follows: 2 golfers/ room = $324 each (total $628); 1 golfer / room = $476; 3 golfers/ room = $273 each (total $819); 1 golfer + 1 non-golfer/ room = $314 = $172 (total $486); and 2 non-golfers/room = $172 each (total $344). Check made payable to the RAMS with Pinehurst listed in “memo” are due by April 1 at the latest. It’s time to sign up for the return match against the “Lakers” from Jefferson-Lakeside to be held on November 7. A shotgun start is scheduled for 9:00 am. We want a large turnout of RAMS to win this “rubber match.” The series is currently tied at 2 wins each.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Fifty years ago this month, Meadowbrook member Randy Campbell became a part of history. Campbell, newly graduated from Virginia Military Institute (VMI) with a degree in Civil Engineering, was in the midst of his military service when he was recommended for a post at Arlington Cemetery. The 23-year old Infantry second lieutenant reported for duty at Ft. Myer in December 1962 as a Funeral Officer in the 1st Battalion Third Infantry – The Old Guard. A few months later he was assigned to be the Officer in Charge of the Salute Battery (gun platoon). Campbell and his men were assigned to The U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, The White House, and Arlington National Cemetery. Their duties included offering cannon salutes to arriving and departing dignitaries and participating in funerals at Arlington. According to Campbell, shortly after lunch on November 22, he was notified that President Kennedy had been shot in Dallas, Texas. Just a short time later, newscaster Walter Cronkite was on television announcing, “This is not confirmed but the President is dead.” When Mrs. Kennedy decided that the President’s final resting place would be Arlington Cemetery, Campbell was summoned to a meeting at the Pentagon to learn more about the funeral arrangements. Many generals, admirals, high-ranking police and fire officials also attended the meeting. The next day, he began carrying out his duties as a part of the funeral which continued until the President was laid to rest in Arlington on November 25, 1963.

Campbell and his wife, Julia, have been members of the club for about 20 years and enjoy the social activities and the pool. Campbell has worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation his entire career and is in no hurry to retire. Julia previously taught at Meadowbrook and Midlothian High Schools and several community colleges. She is currently a member of the adjunct faculty at John Tyler Community

College.

Campbell oversaw the firing of 230 rounds in conjunction with the funeral, including 21 rounds signaling the arrival of President Kennedy’s body at the Capitol to lie in state, 21 rounds announcing the departure to the church for the actual funeral, and the 21 rounds fired at the cemetery. Campbell explains, “It is interesting to note that during that time we did not have access to the modern methods of communication people have now – we only had a landline telephone – no cell phones, no “smart” phones, none of the high-tech communication methods that we take for granted today. The protocol was for the first cannon to fire when the Officer in Charge at the gravesite saluted. We had to locate the cannons a good distance away from the gravesite for safety reasons. We were completely out of sight of people at the gravesite. I took my command over the landline phone from the officer at the gravesite. As the officer at the gravesite raised his hand to salute, I gave the command to begin the 21-gun salute. By all accounts, our timing was excellent.” Randy Campbell grew up in the shadow of what is now Meadowbrook Country Club. “As a young boy, I worked on the farm that is now the golf course.” He graduated from Manchester High School and received a state cadetship supplemented by a football scholarship to attend VMI. Randy earned a master’s degree from West Virginia University and completed advanced studies at Carnegie Mellon University. Campbell’s dad, Arthur, was a carpenter who worked for Will Carnes. His dad’s fingerprints are on many of the houses that surround the club.
