"God Doesn’t Change"
Change is the only thing that doesn't change in this world. Everything is in constant flux. What is new grows old and wears out. We are constantly encouraged to be flexible so that we can adapt to our ever changing culture. Nonstop change can be unsettling. Regardless of how adaptable one is they still need some constants in life. Thankfully the Bible says that God is that constant. This characteristic of God is often called his immutability. Consider the following passages that assert that God is changeless. --"I the LORD do not change" (Mal. 3:6 NIV). --"But you remain the same, and your years will never end," the Psalmist said to God (Psa. 102:27 NIV). --"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (Heb. 13:8 NIV). --"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows" (Jam. 1:17 NIV). It is true that there are some aspects in which God does change. He does react to man's choices whether in salvation or condemnation (Jer. 18:5-10). Jesus did add humanity to divinity just over 2,000 years ago (John 1:1, 14). God does experience emotions like joy (Luke 15:7, 10), grief (Eph. 4:30) and wrath (Psa. 2:12). However, God is absolutely immutable in some very significant ways. He cannot lose any of his divinity (Psa. 90:2). He cannot change from his promised purpose to save his people through Christ (Tit. 1:1-3). God is our rock. David wrote, "Truly he is my rock and my salvation; his is my fortress, I will never be shaken" (Psa. 62:2 NIV). God is a rock who does not roll. If we'll build our lives upon him we can have some stability in this ever-changing world.
