What is engineering?

Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that meet societal and consumer needs.

ABET DEFINITION

Engineering is the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practices applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize economically the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind.

UNESCO DEFINITION

Engineering is the field or discipline, practice, profession and art that relates to the development, acquisition and application of technical, scientific and mathematical knowledge about the understanding, design, development, invention, innovation and use of materials, machines, structures, systems and processes for specific purpose.

What is Mechanical engineering?

Mechanical Engineering is the profession related to the study and use of machines.

They construct build design manufacture machines and engines. A machine transforms, transmits, or uses energy, force or motion for a specific purpose.

Major technical & scientific subjects:

•Machines are designed to fulfill some function (design), this include sketch, drafting CAD, CAS.

•Machines require power (Thermodynamics, combustion, Electrotechnic).

•Machines pollute (air pollution control).

•Machines make heat that has to be removed (heat transfer).

•Machines move, so their motion must be understood (kinematics, dynamics) and controlled (controls).

•Machines must be constructed (manufacturing), this includes CAM.

•Machines have to be made from something (materials).

Major management skills:

PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods, motivating, developing, and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job Administration and Management, Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources, is essential for mechanical engineers.

A great engineer understands that they are part of a larger team working together to make one project come together successfully, and therefore, must work well as part of that team.

Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents, and Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
