PROBLEM 2

In the six-link mechanism shown, it is required to determine the joint reactions and the driving

force P in the power cylinder (links 2&3) when a specified load R acts on link 6. Gravitational,

frictional and inertial effects are all considered negligible.

a) Draw the required free body diagrams in the space provided. Use the given link figures

and add any other free body diagram necessary. Clearly indicate the member types and

the assumed direction of the unknown reactions.

b) Solve for the driving force P and all the reaction forces; in terms of applied force R,

fixed link dimensions (aj, bj, j) and position variables (ij, sij) defined on the figure. (Do

not solve for the position variables). During the solution treat previously solved force

components as known, i.e. do not make any substitutions.
