SermonNotes Sunday,August7,2011

God's Covenant With David2 Samuel 7:1-17 | Vicky Jones preaching

Today’s passage contains the key Old Testament promise, or covenant, that God made to David. Reflect a moment upon what promises you might have made during your life. Have you made particular promises to others? What were they? Have you made any promises to yourself? What about to God?

Today’s passage is about the promise that God makes to us. Old Testament scholar Walter Brueggamen (Columbia Presbyterian Seminary) has said that this passage is “the most crucial theological statement in the Old Testament.” Robert Gordon (Cambridge) called the chapter the “ideological summit...in the Old Testament as a whole.” How familiar have you been with this passage? Why might this passage not be remembered as well as stories such as the Exodus or the Tower of Babel?

The passage stresses what God has done and will do for David. Think back over how God has blessed you. What specifically has God done for you? Are you more aware of what God has done for you, or rather what you do for Him? In the same way, how much do we tend to be aware of what we do for others and forget what others have done or are doing for us?

Most of the passage is about what God will do for David in the future. As you study the passage further, keep in mind the history of Israel. This promise was made in or close to the year 1000 BC. The kingships of both the Northern Kingdom and the Southern Kingdom were ended by the invasions in 721 BC and 586 BC of the Assyrians and Babylonians. If the promise to David includes the establishment of a Davidic Kingship (see below), then how could God’s promise ever be fulfilled?

Read through the entire passage 2 Samuel 7:1-17. Stop whenever you come to a promise. Within the text find these four parts of the promise: • GodwillmakeagreatnameforDavid• GodwillprovideaplaceofsafetyfromevilforHispeople• Godwillprovidea“house”forHispeople• GodwillnevertakeawayHissteadfastlove

David had wanted to provide a (wooden) house for God. What kind of house does God want to provide for David? Think of the great houses of royalty: the House of Windsor, etc. Just who is in the House of David? Are you part of the household of God?

Go back over the four promises and think about how each one was or was not carried out in the Northern and Southern Kingdoms. If they were not fully carried out, then how were the promises fulfilled? Look up references in the New Testa-ment about the New Covenant:

Luke 22:20 (NIV): In the same way, after the supper He (Jesus) took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you.”

Hebrews 9:15 (NIV): For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that He has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

What is the Bible in 90 Days? The Bible in 90 Days is a Bible reading curriculum. It helps people read the entire Bible attentively from cover to cover in 90 days.

What IsN’t the Bible in 90 Days? The Bible in 90 Days is NOT a speed-read through the Bible. Rather, it’s akin to reading the Bible like a novel.

What is the process, in a nutshell? Each participant reads on his or her own, then gathers once a week with other participants. The weekly meetings include guided small group discussion, activities, and a video lesson. For most people, the fellowship, accountability, and material shared during the weekly meetings is crucial to successfully reading the entire Bible.

From OldTestament to New

From OldTestament to New

Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you;He is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11

Is this the beginning of the story of Jesus? Hundreds of years before the birth of Christ, the Old Testament prophet, Isaiah, foretold that Jesus would be born. Discover Jesus throughout the entire Bible in this illuminating study. Each lesson begins in the Old Testament and leads us to the New Testament, where Jesus Christ fulfills and completes the story.

We would love for you to join us for this new series offeredby Bible Study Discussion in 2011-2012. BSD is a place where we all come together to experience God’s transfor-ming power through the study of His Word.
