Work Zone Safety - It is for EveryoneA vast majority of all people hurt or killed in work zones are drivers and their passengers. The power to keep everyone safe, including construction workers, is in the hands of motorists. Follow these tips and make sure everyone makes it home tonight:
Slow down. Drive to road surface and weather conditions.
Be patient and stay calm. Dont use your cell phone. Eliminate all
distractions while driving. Dont tailgate. Pay attention to workers, barrels, cones,
and signs. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and
construction workers and their equipment. Obey workers directing traffic. Merge early. Dont wait until the last second. With more and more construction taking
place at night, pay close attention after dark. Pedestrians and bicyclists are reminded
they must follow all traffic and work zone signs and devices as well.
Laws You Can Live WithSpeedingDo not speed in work zones. You risk a speeding ticket, points on your license, and tough penalties. Speeding also puts yourself, your passengers, and construction workers at risk of serious injury or death. Fines are doubled in work zones.Dont Text and DriveTexting while driving is banned in Michigan. You risk getting a $100 citation if you text behind the wheel, not to mention getting yourself and others injured in a crash. Texting is defined by the Michigan State Police as: reading, manually typing or sending a text message while driving.Kelseys Law cell phone ban for novice driversState law prohibits any drivers with a Level 1 or Level 2 Graduated Drivers License from using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle. Violating this law is a civil infraction. The law does not apply to a novice driver using a cell phone to:
Report a traffic crash, medical emergency or serious road hazard.
Report a situation in which the person believes his or her personal safety is in jeopardy.
Report or avert a possible criminal act against the driver or another person.
The law also does not prohibit novice drivers from using a voice-operated system integrated into their vehicles. For more information, go to www.michigan.gov/teendriver.Commercial driver cell phone banFederal law prohibits commercial truck and bus drivers from using hand-held cell phones while operating a commercial motor vehicle (hands-free devices are still permitted). Drivers breaking this law face fines up to $2,750 each time, possibly losing their commercial drivers license (CDL) for multiple offenses. Employers can be fined up to $11,000 for each offense. If you can Steer it, Clear it - Its our law!Remember that you are required to safely remove your vehicle from the main traveled portion of the roadway IF you are in a crash and your vehicle still operates AND there are no apparent serious injuries (or deaths).Click it or Ticket! You can be fined $65 for not wearing your seat belt. Worse than that, not being belted could result in serious injury or death.

MDOT: Providing the highest quality integrated
transportation services for economic benefit
and improved quality of life.
Toward Zero Deaths is a statewide safety campaign to positively influence driver behavior and improve safety. More than 35,000 fatalities occur on U.S. highways each year, with driver behavior factoring into nearly 90 percent of all fatal crashes. One key to changing driver behavior is education. MDOT is posting traffic fatality statistics on Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) on I, M and US highways as a simple and inexpensive way to educate the public on the scope of one of the most challenging issues facing Michigan and the nation.
