Key drivers of progress in the reduction of child mortality rates

Key drivers of progress in the reduction of child mortality rates

• Access to clean water and sanitation for many households and

• Introduction of child support grants played an important role in improving nutritional, educational and health outcomes among children.

• Key child survival strategies such as immunisations, breastfeeding promotion, PMTCT, anti-retroviral therapy (ART) and treatment of common childhood illnesses (such as diarrhoea and pneumonia) using the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) approach, have contributed to the decline in child mortality noted above.

• Progress on improving maternal health has occurred due to several policy and programme changes that have increased the coverage of essential interventions

• The strong PMTCT programme, which has seen a significant reduction in HIV related deaths during pregnancy.

public clinics and the 2012 National Contraception Clinical Guidelines and National Contraception has seen an expansion of contraceptive choices.

• The 1996 Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act has seen an increase in the uptake of safe and legal pregnancy termination.

• Regular audits of maternal deaths are conducted.

•The National Committee on Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths (NCCEMD), which makes recommendations for the reduction of maternal mortality.

• The question is, What to we need to do to reach these development goals?

• There is a need to strengthen the existing surveillance strategies for monitoring maternal and child morbidity and mortality in South Africa.

• Data based on the current surveillance system do not accurately reflect maternal and child mortality rates in South Africa.

• Improving the maternal and child morbidity and mortality surveillance systems would allow a more reliable comparison of South Africa with other countries and provide a rational basis for public health prevention strategies and improvement of health care services.
