BACKGROUND

MCS Technology Training Course Catalog

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) recently released their updated Standards for Educators. At their core, the ISTE Standards are about pedagogy,

not tools. Which is to say, they emphasize the ways that technology can be used to amplify and even transform learning and teaching. The field of education now realizes

the insufficiency of throwing digital tools into classrooms without further support and expecting valid changes in teaching and, more importantly, improved student

outcomes. ISTE now recognizes seven major strands (See Appendix I) with unique indicators, which when applied successfully, will deepen your practice, promote

collaboration with peers, challenge you to rethink traditional approaches, and prepare students to drive their own learning.

NEW TRAINING MODEL

With the ISTE standards in mind, we have restructured the delivery method and means of providing training opportunities to MCS Teachers and staff. We have designed a

basic core of recommended foundational skills with progression into three instructional strands and one Professional Learning Network strand of continued education. In

addition to the traditional brick-and-mortar training sessions, we have incorporated several optional online improvement courses through Kyte Learning.

OPTIONAL PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES

Teachers may find themselves progressing through parts of all of the described strands at different speeds. The core courses in each strand are listed including optional

elective topics as well as recommended prerequisites or proficiencies if needed for specific classes.

CORE STRANDS DESIGNATIONS

Digital Classroom Environment (DCE): The foundational core of classes to get

the teacher familiarized with the electronic classroom environment include the

MCS Learning Management System (LMS) Schoology, the electronic gradebook

(PowerTeacher Pro) and the devices used by teachers and students.

Digital Content Delivery (DCD): This strand emphasizes the digital workflow and

delivery of content in an electronic format. Topics include presenting with a

Surface, Schoology, and Nearpod.

Digital Formative Feedback (DFF): This strand emphasizes creating and

conducting formative assessment in the classroom. Topics include Schoology,

Nearpod, Kahoot, and other tools.

Digital Learning Activities (DLA): This strand emphasizes the integration of

technology into a variety of classroom activities. Topics include multimedia

apps, strong multimedia project ideas, strategies for searching, and more.

Personal Learning Network (PLN): This strand focuses on building personal

learning networks with technology. The primary focus is Schoology, but

educator have access to a variety of tools.

Online Courses (-OL): Free training through Kyte learning, Microsoft Imagine

Academy, or Google Academy
