(April 20, 2015) - Freshman Shamoya McNeil of the West Virginia University track and field team has been named the Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week. For the second straight weekend, McNeil recorded a career-best mark as a Mountaineer in the triple jump. The Portland, Jamaica, native, reached a distance of 12.51 meters to claim first place in the event at the Virginia Challenge this past weekend. The jump currently ranks No. 28 in the East Region and is the sixth-best jump among all freshmen competitors.     McNeil Named Athlete of the Week

    MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 20, 2015) - Freshman Shamoya McNeil of the West Virginia University track and field team has been named the Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week.

    For the second straight weekend, McNeil recorded a career-best mark as a Mountaineer in the triple jump. The Portland, Jamaica, native, reached a distance of 12.51 meters to claim first place in the event at the Virginia Challenge this past weekend.

    This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for the 2015 edition of the Penn Relays. The collegiate portion of the event begins on Thursday morning and concludes late Saturday night.

    Last Week in Track and Field: West Virginia competed at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Friday and Saturday of last weekend.

    Notes & Quotes: For the second straight weekend, Shamoya McNeil recorded a career-best mark as a Mountaineer in the triple jump ... the Portland, Jamaica, native, jumped 12.51 meters to claim first place in the event at the Virginia Challenge this past weekend ... in the high jump, Marsielle McBeam placed third overall with a season-best jump of 1.68 meters ... Kelly Williams place 11th in her heat and 26th overall in the 1,500-meter run in 4:24.47.

    This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers have a short week, returning to the courts for the Big 12 Championship from April 23-26 in Waco, Texas.

    Last Week in Tennis: WVU (9-12, 0-9) fell to No. 39 Oklahoma, 4-0, on Saturday, April 18, at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts … the Mountaineers closed out the regular-season on Sunday, April 19 against No. 10 Oklahoma State, dropping a 4-0 decision at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts … West Virginia celebrated the career of lone senior Ikttesh Chahal at Sunday’s match.

    Notes and Quotes: Freshman Habiba Shaker has a team-best 12-4 mark in doubles play as she has teamed up with junior Hailey Barrett as well as classmates Lyn Yuen Choo, Yvon Martinez and Carolina Lewis throughout the spring … Shaker holds a 8-3 mark at the No. 4 position and a 3-1 mark at the No. 5 position in singles play … sophomore Kaja Mrgole has tallied nine wins at the No. 1 slot, and freshman Carolina Lewis has a team-best 11-2 mark in dual-match play, with victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots.

    Coach Miha Lisac: “It was a big day for Ik (Ikttesh Chahal). She played her heart out, and it’s good to see that she did well on her senior day. We are all looking forward to the conference tournament because this is what we have been aiming for all season. There are still a lot of steps for us to take, but we are continuing to get better.”

    This Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers are idle until the EAWRC Sprints in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, on Sunday, May 3.

    Last Week in Rowing: West Virginia welcomed Duquesne University for a scrimmage on Sunday, April 19 … both teams raced in a number of different pieces on the Monongahela River in Morgantown, West Virginia.

    Coach Jimmy King: “Thanks to Duquesne for the quality scrimmaging today that certainly benefitted both our programs. We’ll now focus on needed changes over the next two weeks as we work toward the EAWRC Regatta.”

    This Week in Baseball: The WVU baseball team will host Marshall on Tuesday, April 21, at 6 p.m. at Monongalia County Ballpark … the Mountaineers will then host a Big 12 series at Monongalia County Ballpark against Kansas from April 24-26 … Friday’s game will begin at 6 p.m., Saturday’s game will start at 4 p.m. and Sunday’s finale begins at 1 p.m.

    Last Week In Baseball: The Mountaineers went 1-3 last weekend, losing a midweek game against Penn State and then dropping a series against No. 23 Oklahoma ... West Virginia’s lone win of the week came on Saturday against Oklahoma, a 6-5 victory.

    Notes & Quotes: It was another great week of attendance for Monongalia County Ballpark as West Virginia averaged 1,789 fans during last week’s four games … freshman second baseman Kyle Davis has continued his hot hitting with a pair of multi-hit games last week, giving him 20 for the season … Davis is batting .368 with 15 doubles, three homers and 24 RBIs … sophomore first baseman Jackson Cramer hit the game-winning home run against Oklahoma on Saturday, giving him six this season … despite taking the loss on Friday, freshman right-hander BJ Myers was impressive in his first Big 12 start … Myers gave up two runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks in 7.2 innings.
