Era Alaska Era Wear Hero Line

“With no freeway system for hundreds of miles, Era Alaska is the lifeline for the isolated rural inhabitants of the Bering Sea coastline.”

-Discovery Channel

July 1, 2011 I recieved a phone call asking if I could deliver a merchandise line for Era Alaska. There were two catches, it was 24 days from delivery at the Experimental Aircraft Association Convention, and they had no idea what they wanted.

Twenty-five days after accepting the job, my team and I made a delivery of 1,400 shirts to the Flying Wild Alaska cast at the EAA convention in Oshkosh, WI. Two days later when the cast headed home, the shirts were nearly sold out! We are currently selling our way through our third order of 1,200+.

Appropriate Grammar Branding and Merchandising

This is a band I’ve been very involved with as far as their marketing and merchandise are considered. The quote above is one that references how I have made aesthetic considerations when dealing with them. Like most bands, Appropriate Grammar works on a limited budget and is very concious of the image they project. Both of these facts have helped keep me intuned with process and aesthetic.

Appropriate Grammar EP Narrowed Down

An important aspect of the design was that the band would be able to reprint their own merchandise with ease and at a low cost. This merchandise was sold to raise funds for their full length album.

Appropriate Grammar EP Finals

With a homemade silk screen and a circular stencil Appropriate Grammar was able to produce these for just under 70¢ per unit and was able to fund most of their album with the procedes.

Appropriate Grammar Custom Bass Drum Head

To celebrate not only a new C&C custom drum kit, but also the full length album being released, I was asked by drummer, Steve Gardels, to design a “Presdential Seal” custom drum head.

Grazing In The Future Pasture DVD Cases

Future Pasture was a collectively run venue/ community center in the Minneapolis area and the subject my second documentary. I made this short in order to spread awareness of the music this sort of environment was cultivating. Shortly after I finished, Future Pas-ture was being threatened to be shut down by city officials. I made these cases as a means to offer support to the collective, and help them raise funds to keep the space open. Since the collective was based in the Do-it-yourself movement, I chose to produce these cases using photolithography processes to help push their values aesthetically. Each design is a 3 color print inspired by each of the collective’s founding members’ bands.

“Grazing in the Future Pasture is a documentary about an underground music and community focused collective in Minneapolis/ St. Paul, MN. With reactionary ideas and progressive music, these young and driven people are trying to make an impact. This documentary is an introduction to the group, their start, and their future.”

Trans-Global Group LLC

Trans-Global Group LLC is an action/ adventure media company. Started on a cliff-side in Belize with a single camera, they now boast as being the creators of Discovery Channel’s highest rated premeiring show of all time, “Flying Wild Alaska”. I’ve done a large array of projects for Trans-Global Group LLC, often with short deadlines and little to no direction. They keep coming back because of the variety of aesethics I can develop and my ability to look ahead in the project and streamline the process.

Wall: The Journey Up

I worked remotely from Kansas City with the producers, director, and editors Los Angeles. On this movie I was entrusted with the full visual identity of the film, everything from the in movie motion graphics to the movie posters and DVD cases. With a deadline again with a month away, I was pressured to make this charity and it’s founder look even better than they already do.

“Wall: The Journey Up tells the heroic story of Steve Wampler’s quest to be the first person with Cerebral Palsy to climb El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, a vertical face that’s over twice the height of the Empire State Building. Steve imagined his journey would capture the attention of America and help raise money for the wilderness camp he runs with his wife for children with disabilities.”

The first avenue I was asked to explore was to keep the design clean, simple, classic, and bold and I was asked to start in red, white, and black.

We quickly learned that strategy would not work for this unique of a story. The map was dropped to simplify how the information was delivered and the mountain became the focus for the design.

Trans-Global Pitch Material

A big part of Trans-Globals Business is developing new show ideas. When they have the idea, but then need the look, they come to me. I create the aesthetics, layout, and edit the copy to match the feel they would hope to have. I’ve done several pitch pieces for them but can only show you a couple becuase most are currently being produced and are held under confidentiality.

Whenever I see something, and I just love the look of it, I want to know how to do it. Rather than going home and just watching tv, I’ll sit down and work on that style until it is mine. The next night I typically have several renditions. For example:
