Home Care Medical | Bracing, Compression Garments and Footwear

Should T.E.D. stockings be prescribed for all patients needing compression hosiery? Many physicians write a prescription for T.E.D. stockings thinking they are the same as graduated compression hosiery; however, T.E.D. stockings are typically worn by non-ambulatory, post-surgical patients as a treatment for blood clots. While T.E.D. stockings do provide mild, uniform compression throughout the stocking, they are not meant to treat or correct the most common problems associated with vein or vascular conditions, edema, lymphedema or hypotension diseases.

Patients with these conditions should be wearing graduated compression hosiery, not T.E.D. Stockings. Compression hosiery designed to treat vein or vascular disease should be graduated, with the greatest pressure at the ankle and diminishing pressure as the stocking goes up over the calf or thigh. The amount of pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). To assist the physician in prescribing the most accurate compression level, Home Care Medical has preprinted prescription pads with reference charts (please see samples below). The reference chart enables the physician to match the patient’s diagnosis with the proper compression level. The preprinted prescription enables the physician to simply check off type (ready-to-wear or custom), style (knee, thigh, etc.) and the compression level. To receive Home Care Medical’s prescription pad with reference chart, please contact your Home Care Medical sales representative or care coordinator.

To further ensure proper treatment, patients requiring graduated compression hosiery should be fit and measured by a certified compression garment fitter. Patients can schedule appointments with a certified fitter by calling 414.423.8800 at our Milwaukee and West Bend retail stores.
